Federal and state authorities are investigating a fatal encounter involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers after a person was shot and killed Monday morning in Biddeford, Maine.
Officials have confirmed ICE’s involvement but have released few details about what led to the shooting, which is expected to be reviewed by the FBI along with state investigators.
The shooting occurred near Pool Street in Biddeford, prompting a large law enforcement response and the closure of nearby roads as investigators processed the scene.
Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau (D), who represents part of Biddeford, confirmed that one person had been killed and that ICE was involved.
He said the Maine State Police and Department of Public Safety were gathering information and that additional details would be released as they became available, according to The Post Millennial.
A witness who spoke with the Biddeford Gazette said he saw an ICE agent exit an unmarked vehicle, draw a firearm, and confront the driver of a nearby car.
Lucas Scott said the driver appeared to drive toward the officer. Scott estimated that four shots were fired.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the witness’s account, and investigators have not yet released an official timeline describing what occurred before the shooting.
Images and video circulating online appeared to show a white sedan with front-end damage positioned near a law enforcement vehicle as investigators marked evidence throughout the area.
Authorities have not publicly identified the person who was killed.
The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! Maine said the individual was a 26-year-old Colombian national who had authorization to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number, according to Bangor Daily News.
Officials have not independently confirmed those details, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Gov. Janet Mills (D) said she had been briefed on the shooting and acknowledged that incidents involving deadly force are alarming for local communities.
She said the Maine State Police were working alongside the Attorney General’s Office, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and federal authorities to determine exactly what happened during the encounter, KGW reported.
The shooting prompted immediate political and public reaction.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat whose district includes Biddeford, said her office was gathering additional information and would seek answers about the incident as more facts become available.
Meanwhile, local activist groups announced demonstrations shortly after reports of the shooting, criticizing ICE’s involvement before investigators had publicly released a full account of the events.
The incident comes as immigration enforcement operations continue to receive heightened national attention under the Trump administration.
Supporters of expanded ICE operations argue they are necessary to enforce federal immigration laws and remove individuals who are in the country illegally, while critics have questioned some enforcement tactics and called for greater oversight.
The Biddeford investigation is expected to add to that ongoing debate as authorities continue reviewing the evidence.
The Maine shooting also follows several other recent fatal encounters involving federal immigration officers that have drawn nationwide attention.
In those cases, authorities have cited self-defense or officer safety concerns, while some lawmakers and advocacy organizations have called for independent investigations into the use of deadly force.
Officials have not indicated whether the circumstances in Biddeford were similar, and investigators have not released findings regarding Monday’s shooting.
Authorities have not announced whether anyone else was injured or whether additional charges could result from the incident.
Investigators are expected to determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting, including the actions of the driver and the ICE personnel involved.
Federal and state officials have said more information will be released as the investigation continues.
