A voice heard by millions of American households nightly has gone silent.
Sony Pictures Television Studios confirmed Tuesday that it has suspended Jim Thornton, the man behind the microphone on “Wheel of Fortune” for more than a decade, as an internal investigation unfolds.
Sony’s statement to the Daily Mail was brief and pointed: the company said it had “recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” adding that he “has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune” while a recasting process moves forward alongside “a thorough investigation.”
What exactly triggered the suspension remains unclear. Sony’s statement offered no specifics about the nature of the allegations against its longtime announcer.
Thornton himself has yet to weigh in. The Daily Mail sought comment from him directly, but no response had come back by the time of publication.
The trail leading to this moment reportedly begins in the sky.
TMZ broke the news that investigators are focused on an American Airlines flight Thornton took in May, during which a fellow passenger flagged concerns about him to a member of the flight crew.
Whatever happened on board was apparently alarming enough to prompt the pilot to radio ahead.
Law enforcement officers were reportedly stationed at the gate, ready to meet Thornton the moment the plane touched down.
A photograph taken during the flight, showing Thornton in a jacket bearing the “Wheel of Fortune” logo, has since surfaced publicly.
Per TMZ’s reporting, officers questioned him upon arrival before letting him leave without incident.
American Airlines corroborated the broad strokes of the story in its own statement, confirming that “on May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard.”
Thornton’s association with “Wheel of Fortune” is a long one.
He stepped into the announcer’s chair in 2011, filling a void left by the death of Charlie O’Donnell, who had held the job before him and died in November 2010 at the age of 78.
Back then, the show’s on-screen chemistry belonged to Pat Sajak and Vanna White, the duo who anchored “Wheel of Fortune” for generations of viewers before the recent changing of the guard.
Unlike the hosts, Thornton has operated mostly unseen, his voice a constant presence without a face to match for most audiences.
A rare break from that pattern came in 2023, when producers let him step out from behind the curtain to host a round himself, granting a contestant’s wish to meet him.
Television’s game-show landscape shifted further in September 2024, when Ryan Seacrest took over hosting duties from the retiring Sajak, pairing up with White to lead the franchise into a new era.
Long before “Wheel of Fortune” became his signature gig, Thornton had a brief run announcing for a rival program: “The Price Is Right,” where he worked in 2004.
Beyond the game-show world, Thornton has quietly built a career in animation and voice work.
His credits include small parts in Disney-Pixar blockbusters “Monsters, Inc.” and “Wall-E,” along with recurring work on Fox’s “The Cleveland Show.”
His most substantial acting credit, however, traces back to MTV.
Thornton held a main cast spot during the 2006-2007 revival of “Celebrity Deathmatch,” the stop-motion series that resurrected a cult classic which originally ran from 1998 to 2002.
The show’s premise was gleefully absurd — claymation celebrities squaring off in wrestling matches that always ended in exaggerated, over-the-top deaths.
Thornton gave voice to Jimmy Gomez, one of the announcers calling the carnage, a role that TMZ notes stands as the most significant of his acting career.
As Sony’s investigation proceeds behind closed doors, no timeline has been given for when — or whether — Thornton might return to the booth that made him a household voice.
