President Donald Trump raised eyebrows Saturday after delivering an unusual assessment of Republican Sen. Jon Husted’s physical appearance, telling supporters that he had personally examined the Ohio lawmaker from head to toe.
Trump made the remarks October 17 during a campaign rally at Northern Kentucky University’s Truist Arena in Highland Heights, where he was supporting Republican candidates ahead of the November midterm elections.
The president recalled previously examining Husted’s physique, including his backside, shoulders, feet, hands and jawline.
“I stood right over here, and I examined his ass. I never did that — no, I never did that with a man before,” Trump told the crowd.
He continued describing the senator’s physical attributes, eventually focusing on Husted’s unusually strong jaw.
Trump joked that someone confronting the Ohio Republican in a bar fight would probably regret the decision.
The comments were not the first time Trump had publicly discussed Husted’s appearance.
Earlier this month, during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, the president offered a similar description of the senator, claiming he had never previously examined another man in such detail.
Trump also recalled patting Husted on the shoulder and being surprised by his muscular build.
The president compared the senator’s shoulder to a piece of steel, joking that his hand was still recovering from the encounter.
However, Trump’s latest comments came during a rally primarily intended to support Republican candidates in Kentucky, rather than Husted’s campaign in neighboring Ohio.
The event featured Senate candidate Andy Barr, who is seeking the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell.
Trump also campaigned for Republican congressional candidate Ed Gallrein, who defeated Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s Republican primary earlier this year.
Despite the focus on Kentucky’s elections, Trump devoted part of his remarks to Husted, who is facing former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio’s special Senate election.
Husted was appointed to the Senate following JD Vance’s departure to become vice president.
Brown, who lost his Senate seat in 2024, is attempting a political comeback in the November contest.
Trump claimed Saturday that his repeated compliments about Husted’s appearance had contributed to improving the Republican’s standing among voters.
The president suggested Husted had gained approximately nine or 10 percentage points since he began publicly praising the senator’s physical attributes.
However, recent polling cited by the Daily Mail showed Brown ahead of Husted.
A Bowling Green State University survey released this week placed Brown at 48% support among likely voters, compared with 42% for Husted.
The six-point advantage represented an increase from Brown’s three-point lead in September.
Other surveys have also shown Brown ahead, including a Marist poll indicating an eight-point advantage.
The RealClearPolitics polling average placed Brown ahead by more than three percentage points.
Despite those figures, Trump expressed confidence in Husted’s campaign while criticizing his Democratic opponent.
The president described Brown as “a very bad candidate, a failed senator” and insisted that Husted had a strong opportunity to win the race.
Trump’s appearance in Kentucky came during a series of campaign stops across Republican-leaning states, including recent visits to Ohio and Georgia.
The president has been campaigning for GOP candidates as Republicans seek to maintain their congressional majorities in the November 3 midterm elections.
With the election approaching, Trump has continued to use campaign rallies to promote his preferred candidates, frequently mixing political arguments with personal anecdotes and unscripted remarks, per the Daily Mail.
Saturday’s description of Husted’s physique became one of the more unusual moments of the event, as the president returned to a subject he had already discussed publicly earlier in the month.
