New allegations circulating online have renewed attention to the death of Tafari Campbell, a former White House chef who drowned near former President Barack Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard estate in July 2023.
A social media post claims that a former housekeeper for Obama has come forward with allegations involving a previously undisclosed personal relationship between the former president and Campbell.
According to the post, the housekeeper allegedly claimed that Obama and Campbell had been involved in a romantic relationship and that Campbell was preparing to disclose it publicly shortly before his death.
The post does not identify the housekeeper, provide a recorded interview or include documentation establishing the alleged relationship.
The allegations extend to the circumstances surrounding Campbell’s death, with the account claiming that local law enforcement initially classified the incident as a homicide.
It further alleges that the FBI, during former President Joe Biden’s administration, intervened in the investigation and pressured the medical examiner to change the official cause of death to accidental drowning.
The post attributes those accusations to unnamed local police sources purportedly familiar with the investigation.
However, it does not identify those officials or provide records documenting the alleged federal intervention.
Campbell, 45, died July 23, 2023, after entering Edgartown Great Pond while paddleboarding near the Obama family’s Massachusetts property.
Authorities launched an emergency search after a fellow paddleboarder reportedly witnessed Campbell struggling in the water before disappearing beneath the surface.
His body was recovered the following morning in approximately eight feet of water, roughly 100 feet from shore.
The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner subsequently determined that Campbell died from accidental drowning.
State Police records also documented the investigation, including witness interviews, emergency response activities and the circumstances surrounding the recovery of Campbell’s body.
The police report, despite carrying the administrative heading “Homicide/Death Report,” identified the incident as a drowning and recorded that investigators did not suspect criminal activity.
The latest social media accusations suggest that the official determination resulted from outside pressure, although the post provides no documents or named witnesses substantiating that claim.
Campbell had worked as a sous chef at the White House during Obama’s presidency before continuing his employment with the family after the administration ended in 2017.
His death attracted national attention, particularly because it occurred near the former president’s private residence.
Barack and Michelle Obama were not at the property when Campbell entered the water, according to information released by authorities following the incident.
The Obamas publicly mourned Campbell, describing him as an important member of their extended family.
Campbell was survived by his wife and two sons.
