Bizarre Joy Reid ‘Blackface’

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid unleashed a barrage of racially charged attacks against rapper Nicki Minaj, accusing Republicans of using her as a prop to manufacture credibility with Black voters.

Reid made the remarks during an appearance on “The Don Lemon Show, “where she argued the GOP lacks cultural relevance and is attempting to borrow it through Minaj’s recent friendliness with President Donald Trump.

“There’s a reason that the other side is giddy about having Nicki Minaj,” Reid said, claiming Republicans neither respect nor understand the rapper but see her as politically useful.

Reid alleged the Republican Party despises Minaj’s music and background but is willing to embrace her publicly to counter criticism that it lacks support among Black Americans.

She framed Minaj’s alignment with Trump as transactional and insulting, accusing Republicans of parading her for what Reid described as “cultural cool.”

“The reason they want her on a leash as their house pet cuddled at Donald Trump’s feet,” Reid said, “is because they need Black people to give them cultural cool.”

Reid went further, describing Minaj as MAGA’s “new house pet” and accusing conservatives of attempting to put what she called “blackface” on their political movement.

The comments immediately sparked backlash, with critics accusing Reid of demeaning Minaj and using racially loaded language to attack a Black woman for her political independence.

Minaj has drawn attention in recent months for criticizing cancel culture and publicly aligning with the Trump administration on select issues, including international religious persecution, per Fox News.

President Trump has praised Minaj, recently calling her “a winner” after she broke from Hollywood orthodoxy and refused to toe progressive talking points.

Reid dismissed Minaj’s political choices as opportunistic and questioned her credibility as a cultural figure.

“She’ll never be Rihanna,” Reid said. “She’ll never have a brand like Rihanna. She’ll never be Beyoncé.”

Reid also attacked Minaj’s age and career, calling her a “40-some-year-old Black female rapper” and accusing her of hating other women in the industry.

She specifically referenced Cardi B, suggesting Minaj resents younger or more popular artists.

Reid accused Minaj of not caring about Black people or immigrants, despite Minaj’s own background as a Trinidadian immigrant.

The remarks struck many viewers as deeply personal and dismissive, shifting from political critique into character assassination.

Conservatives and free speech advocates argued Reid’s comments reflected an expectation that Black entertainers must conform politically or face public shaming.

They also noted the irony of Reid accusing others of racism while deploying demeaning language toward a Black woman who refused to align with progressive politics.

Minaj has not responded directly to Reid’s comments but has previously said she rejects being told how to think or vote.

Her supporters argue the backlash proves her point about ideological gatekeeping within entertainment and media circles.

Reid’s comments underscore a growing divide between liberal commentators and high-profile artists who break ranks with Democratic orthodoxy.

As the 2026 election cycle heats up, Minaj’s political independence appears to have made her a lightning rod for broader cultural and racial tensions.
