The mayoral race in New York City has officially ended after months of fierce political debate between socialist Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and Republican candidate Curtis Silwa.
Mamdani was officially declared the victor by Decision Desk HQ and will serve as the 111th mayor of New York City.
As polls indicated early on, Mamdani was the favorite to win the race, with his broad appeal among young voters in New York City.
Now, Mamdani will replace New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), who initially dropped out of the mayoral race.
Mamdani’s policies appeared to resonate with voters in New York City, despite his ideology being primarily viewed as socialist.
Among his policies are creating a universal childcare program, taxing the city’s highest earners, increasing the corporate tax rate, eliminating fares on city buses, and establishing government-supported grocery stores, according to CNN.
Mamdani had defeated Cuomo in the June Democratic primary, forcing the former New York governor to run as an independent instead.
In a shock to conservatives, President Donald Trump had thrown his weight behind Cuomo, emphasizing the importance of not electing “Communist” Mamdani.
In fact, the president said that he would “highly unlikely” support New York City from the federal level if Mamdani won.
“It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win. His principles have been tested for over a thousand years, and never once have they been successful. I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” Trump said.
“He was nothing as an Assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class and, as Mayor of potentially, again, the Greatest City in the World, HE HAS NO CHANCE to bring it back to its former Glory! We must also remember this — A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani. Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” he added.

Given Mamdani’s victory, a fierce battle is expected between the Trump administration and New York City.
Former President Barack Obama, who is quick to endorse Democratic candidates in prominent races, refused to support Mamdani publicly, as previously reported by Resist the Mainstream.
The former president called Mamdani just days before the election, but did not endorse him.
Despite this, Mamdani cruised to victory against Cuomo and Silwa.
