Democrats and media types today pretend to pine for Reagan as the ‘respectable’ kind of Republican.
But that’s only because he’s now safely in the rearview mirror of history and can do us no more harm. When he was in office, they HATED him, and mocked his policies.
What Reagan introduced as a Strategic Defence Initiative was given a derisive nickname by his enemies in the press. ‘Star Wars’. They mocked him for it. The real problem was not his vision so much as the fact that technology hadn’t yet caught up with the vision.
Forty years have passed since then, and tech has changed… and Trump is picking up Reagan’s dream and running with it.
Innovation is now at the point where we now carry supercomputers in our pocket and have private industry delivering payloads into space.
Since the end of the Cold War, we’ve seen Israel deliver proof of concept evidence that Reagan’s idea of a missile shield. Thousands of rockets inbound to Israeli cities have been shot down with minimal harm — even when the incoming attacks come in waves. The next jump in innovation will be a laser layer of defense that doesn’t require the supply-chain issue of reloading the defensive missiles that a missile shield relies on.
While addressing the National Guard Association in Detroit, Trump pledged to initiate a Space National Guard before pledging an unprecedented new layer of national defense.
The former president later pledged to build an antimissile system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system, which is capable of intercepting short-range rockets in the air above the state.
“And we’re going to build a great Iron Dome for missile defense around our nation. Other countries have said Israel has it. You know, [former President] Ronald Reagan wanted this many years ago, but we didn’t have the technology at that point. But now we have the technology,” Trump said.
Trump has repeatedly vowed to create an Iron Dome-style system, stating on the campaign trail over the past year he would work to build “the greatest dome of them all” due to “a lot of hostile people out there.” — The Hill
They mock Trump now, like they mocked Reagan then.
How long do you think it will be until Trump gets the ‘strange new respect’ that other Republican leaders whose life and legacy have been safely confined to history as new leaders rise up who are ‘far more dangerous’ than Trump ever was?
They’ve already dropped the ‘War Criminal’ narrative for Dubya. And when’s the last time you’ve heard them say ‘BushHitler?’
