Trump Drops Bold Vow That Has Critics Reeling

President Donald Trump used the 74th annual National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday to declare that God and faith are reclaiming their place at the center of American life.

Speaking at the Washington Hilton before lawmakers, faith leaders, and international dignitaries, Trump framed his second term as a period of spiritual renewal.

“We are bringing religion back, hotter than ever before,” he declared. “You can’t be happy without that belief.”

The event, a longstanding bipartisan tradition held each February, offered Trump a platform to mark the one-year anniversary of the White House Faith Office and emphasize religion’s renewed role in national policy.

The president said faith had been marginalized in public life and insisted his administration was restoring its influence.

“We are bringing God back into our lives, and we’re going to do it with purpose,” he told attendees.

Trump connected the spiritual revival to America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, announcing a public gathering on the National Mall, “Rededicate 250,” scheduled for May 17.

He described the event as a moment for Americans to pray together and honor the nation’s founding principles.

“When our founders proclaimed the immortal truths that echoed around the world, they declared that all of us are made free and equal by the hand of our Creator,” he said.

Personal experience shaped much of Trump’s message, the South Florida Reporter noted.

Reflecting on surviving assassination attempts in 2024, he credited God’s intervention, describing the experience as transformative and saying it “changed something” in him, presenting his survival as both a personal and spiritual journey and a sign of divine purpose.

Trump highlighted the administration’s efforts to protect religious expression.

He praised Attorney General Pam Bondi’s leadership of the Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias and referenced new Department of Education guidance supporting prayer and religious speech in schools.

“We’ll win it,” he assured the crowd, signaling the White House’s commitment to defending faith in public life.

Looking at broader cultural trends, Trump said evidence of a Christian resurgence is visible in American society.

He pointed to rising Bible sales and growing church attendance among younger Americans, emphasizing that millennials and Generation Z are increasingly engaging in religious life.

“These are signs that belief is alive and well in our country,” he said.

Faith and international policy intersected in Trump’s remarks on global events.

Citing U.S. military action in Nigeria, he framed intervention as a defense of persecuted Christians.

“When Christians come under attack,” he said, “they know they’re going to be defended by this administration.”

The breakfast also included foreign dignitaries, such as Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and Nigerian First Lady Remi Tinubu, along with performances by Christian artists, EWTN News reported.

Stories of courage and faith were highlighted alongside policy announcements.

Trump honored two camp counselors credited with saving children during a deadly 2025 flood, saying, “Prayers strengthen, prayers heal, prayer empowers, and prayer saves.”

He used these examples to underline the enduring role of faith in daily American life.

While supporters praised the speech as a reaffirmation of the nation’s religious heritage, secular and civil liberties groups criticized it for blurring the line between church and state.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State warned that emphasizing one faith risks alienating others, highlighting ongoing debates over religion’s role in public life.

Trump’s appearance at the National Prayer Breakfast reinforced his administration’s focus on faith as a defining element of governance.

For supporters, it was a call to spiritual renewal; for critics, a reminder of the tension between personal belief and public policy.
