Top Dem Knifed by Party After Ultimate Betrayal

Colorado Democrats delivered a stunning rebuke to one of their own Wednesday night as party officials overwhelmingly voted to formally censure Democratic Gov. Jared Polis over his controversial decision to reduce the prison sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, setting off escalating fallout across Colorado politics.

The Colorado Democratic Party’s State Central Committee approved the measure with nearly 90 percent support, a striking move against a governor who has served as one of the party’s most prominent figures for years.

The disciplinary action sidelines Polis from high-profile roles at official Democratic Party functions, preventing him from appearing in ceremonial capacities at events including DemFest and the Obama Gala, the Colorado Sun reported.

Criticism intensified after Polis announced last week that he would use his clemency authority to reduce Peters’ nearly nine-year prison sentence by half and allow her release on parole beginning June 1.

Peters, the former Mesa County clerk, was convicted in 2024 on multiple felony charges tied to unauthorized access to election equipment during efforts connected to claims surrounding the 2020 election.

Peters’ convictions included attempting to influence a public official, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, official misconduct, failure to comply with an order from the secretary of state, and violations tied to election system security procedures.

Prosecutors argued Peters coordinated efforts allowing unauthorized access to secure election equipment in Mesa County.

Polis has repeatedly defended his decision, arguing Peters’ punishment exceeded penalties imposed in similar public corruption cases and citing appellate concerns that constitutionally protected speech may have factored too heavily into the original punishment.

The governor emphasized that his action was not a pardon and maintained Peters deserved prison time but argued a shorter sentence was more appropriate.

“My goal is to make the right decision with the information I have and that’s exactly what I did in this case,” Polis said, according to CBS News. “No case should be viewed from a partisan lens.”

Opposition spread rapidly inside his own party. Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib said hundreds of Democrats signed petitions demanding formal action against the governor.

Party leaders also approved language stating Polis’ decision “materially harmed” the party’s credibility, saying the governor’s action conflicted with party priorities surrounding election security and institutional trust.

Several prominent Democrats also publicly criticized Polis.

Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) said leaders must remain “willing to call out our own when they fall short,” according to Colorado Newsline.

The backlash extended beyond formal party criticism, with some activists and party members discussing additional accountability measures as frustration continued building inside Democratic circles.

Republican Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubenstein, who prosecuted Peters, also criticized Polis’ decision, arguing the former clerk’s conduct represented a prolonged effort to bypass election safeguards and that legal officials closest to the case overwhelmingly opposed reducing her sentence.

Some Democrats have also floated impeachment discussions, though legislative leaders have acknowledged there currently is not enough support to pursue a special legislative session that could open additional avenues for action.

Polis’ office remained firm following Wednesday’s vote.

“Sometimes the right thing isn’t the popular thing with everybody,” Polis spokesman Eric Maruyama said. “Democracy is strongest when disagreement is met with debate and dialogue, not censorship.”

The conflict has highlighted growing tensions within Colorado Democratic leadership, turning a clemency decision into a broader fight over election security, accountability, and the party’s future direction.
