A gun-drawn federal raid on a Tennessee household in 2021 has now ended with a seven-figure settlement from the very agency that ordered it.
Paul Vaughn, a father of 11, found himself in the crosshairs of the Biden Justice Department after joining a protest outside an abortion clinic that same year.
Prosecutors charged him under the FACE Act, a statute targeting threats of force, obstruction, or property damage aimed at reproductive health care facilities. The charge alone carried a possible decade in prison.
Two days after those charges landed, armed agents descended on Vaughn’s home. His attorneys at the Thomas More Society say the arrest happened directly in front of his family.
Prosecutors did not stop there. A felony conspiracy charge followed, stacking Vaughn’s potential prison time to 10.5 years.
Fast forward to today, and Vaughn tells Fox News the legal fight he waged against the department has produced a settlement worth seven figures.
For Vaughn, the payout represents more than money. He described it as closure after years of fallout from what he called the “egregious deeds of the Biden DOJ.”
“Obviously, money doesn’t equate justice, and there’s not a true sense of justice in the settlement, but it is an acknowledgment of wrong, and it is something to help make up for the time lost,” Vaughn said.
The scene inside the Vaughn household during the raid paints a jarring picture. Seven of his 11 children, spanning ages 18 months to 18 years, were present when agents arrived.
Three of those children ended up “basically held at gunpoint,” according to Vaughn’s own account of the encounter.
Years later, the psychological toll remains visible. Vaughn says his youngest child, now five, still carries anxiety tied to that day.
“God’s been gracious to us and has helped us through this process. But there’s still a lot of unknowns of how does this impact a child’s life, going into their adult years,” he said.
Vaughn’s ordeal fits into a much larger pattern. Twenty-four pro-life protesters convicted under the FACE Act during the Biden administration have since received pardons from President Trump.
Beyond the pardons, the Justice Department rolled out a memo establishing new charging guidelines for future FACE Act cases.
Steve Crampton, an attorney with the Thomas More Society, weighed in on that policy shift during his conversation with Fox News.
“We’ve never seen anything like that,” Crampton said of the department’s about-face.
Crampton framed the settlement as more than a resolution for one family. He sees it as a potential signal to the public.
He said he hopes it “is a step toward restoring some faith in the system, faith in the rule of law actually being respected by federal law enforcement agencies.”
The attorney did not mince words about what his client endured under the prior administration.
“What was done to Paul and his family was a profound injustice, and we are grateful that this settlement acknowledges that,” Crampton said.
He also praised the current Justice Department leadership for revisiting the previous administration’s tactics.
“We also commend the Trump Department of Justice for having the courage to look at what its predecessor did, call it what it was — an abuse of power — and change course,” Crampton said.
Crampton closed with a broader message aimed at protecting religious expression outside abortion clinics nationwide.
“No American should ever again have to fear an FBI raid for praying and offering hope to women in need,” he said.
Vaughn’s case now stands as one of the most closely watched examples of the DOJ reversing its own prior enforcement decisions.
The settlement closes a chapter that began with a 2021 sidewalk protest and escalated into an armed raid on a family home.
Federal officials have not issued additional public comment beyond the terms already confirmed through Vaughn’s legal team.
The Thomas More Society continues to represent other defendants swept up in FACE Act prosecutions filed during the previous administration.
