A White House invitation now awaits a 16-year-old California lifeguard whose split-second decision to charge into violent surf spared a young boy’s life.
President Donald Trump revealed the honor Tuesday on Truth Social, announcing plans to welcome the teenager and his family to Washington for a formal ceremony.
“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor,” Trump wrote. “Very brave, he deserves it!”
The presidential recognition traces back to Saturday, when chaos erupted along the shoreline at Seabright Beach in California.
A boy swimming near shore was suddenly ripped away from safety by a powerful, unpredictable swell known as a “sneaker wave.”
Photographer Scott Vander Dussen happened to be filming nearby and captured the entire sequence on camera.
Speaking with the Daily Mail, he explained that the ocean had remained calm through much of the day before turning dangerous in an instant.
Vander Dussen described watching the boy vanish into the churn roughly 200 meters from shore. “He was just sucked out,” he said. “We then saw the kid’s head bobbing up and down.”
Rather than wait for backup, the teenage lifeguard immediately plunged into the pounding waves alone.
He fought against the current with nothing but his own strength and training, closing the distance between himself and the drowning child.
Vander Dussen watched the entire ordeal unfold through his camera lens, calling the rescue nothing short of extraordinary. “It is unbelievable,” he said of the moment the lifeguard reached the boy.
Battling the same current that had swept the child away, the lifeguard managed to haul him back toward shore and out of danger. Both emerged from the surf shaken but alive.
Vander Dussen said he approached the pair once they reached dry sand, speaking briefly with both the rescuer and the boy he had just pulled from the ocean.
Remarkably, the lifeguard caught his breath and returned to his post for the rest of his shift.
The boy’s condition brought further relief to onlookers. Vander Dussen noted that the child was able to stand upright on his own within minutes of the rescue, showing no signs of serious harm.
Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and examined the boy at the scene.
Paramedics ultimately ccleared him medically before releasing him back to his parents, who had been waiting anxiously on the sand.
Identity of the young lifeguard remains undisclosed by choice. What is known, according to Vander Dussen, is that the rescue occurred during the teenager’s very first year serving on lifeguard patrol.
Vander Dussen, who lives only blocks from the beach, said he is personally familiar with the lifeguards who patrol the area.
He described the 16-year-old as a gifted athlete, noting his background competing in water polo.
“It’s his first year on lifeguard patrol,” Vander Dussen reiterated. “It was unbelievable.”
Footage of the rescue spread rapidly once posted online, racking up millions of views within days. Social media users across the country praised the teenager’s composure and courage under pressure.
That sudden wave of public attention followed the lifeguard well beyond the beach itself.
Vander Dussen said that although the teen returned to work the day of the rescue, his newfound fame made a normal shift impossible just one day later.
Crowds of grateful beachgoers reportedly sought him out in person to offer their thanks, prompting supervisors to pull him from active duty.
“He had so many people wanting to thank him, so they took him off” his shift, Vander Dussen explained.
Reflecting on how the frightening episode ultimately resolved, Vander Dussen expressed gratitude that it ended without tragedy. “I’m glad it has a positive spin,” he said.
He added hope that the viral moment could inspire something larger than a single rescue. “Hopefully we can capitalize it into something positive,” Vander Dussen said.
With a ceremony at the White House now on the horizon, the teenager’s instinctive act of bravery has traveled far beyond the shoreline where it began — from a struggling swimmer 200 meters out to sea, to national recognition from the President of the United States himself.
