The severed head and hands of 16-year-old Amanda Leariel Overstreet, who vanished nearly 20 years ago, have been discovered in a freezer at a Colorado home that was sold earlier this year, sparking a homicide investigation. The home was previously owned by Overstreet’s mother, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
Overstreet, last seen in 2005, was identified after DNA testing confirmed the remains found in the freezer. The grim discovery was made in January when a person arrived at the property in Grand Junction, Colorado, to retrieve a refrigerator from the new owner. Police were called to investigate a “suspicious incident” and found the head and hands inside the appliance.
“Upon arrival, deputies found the head and hands of a human in a freezer that had been offered for free by the new homeowner,” police said.
Though it took nine months to officially confirm the identity of the remains, Overstreet’s case now moves forward as investigators work to uncover how her body ended up in the freezer. Authorities revealed that Overstreet had never been reported missing at the time of her disappearance.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that the house had been fully remodeled and sold to an entirely new owner. They urged the public to respect the privacy of the current homeowner and their neighbors.
