New Orleans officials identify suspect in New Year’s terror attack

Officials in New Orleans have stated they have identified the suspect responsible for the deadly New Year’s Eve attack but are withholding the name for now due to its commonality. Authorities want to ensure the correct identity before making it public, according to ABC News.

A press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time, where more details are expected to be shared.

Details of the Attack

Authorities have confirmed that the truck involved in the attack crossed the U.S.-Mexico border at Eagle Pass, Texas, two days before the incident. The vehicle, an electric Ford F-150, was rented through the Turo car-sharing app, which allows private owners to lease their vehicles.

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the suspect appeared intent on causing maximum harm. After driving into a crowded area on Bourbon Street, the attacker exited the vehicle and opened fire, killing 10 people and injuring at least 35 others.

Law enforcement officers engaged the suspect in a firefight, ultimately killing him. Two officers were injured in the exchange.

The FBI is treating the incident as a terrorist attack. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser mentioned reports that a flagpole on the truck might have displayed an ISIS flag, though this has not been officially confirmed.

As the investigation continues, local officials and federal agencies are working to uncover more details about the suspect, including potential motives and affiliations. The incident has heightened concerns over border security and the potential misuse of car-sharing platforms for malicious purposes.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
