Middle Schoolers Shock With Split-Second Rescue Mission

A group of Mississippi middle school students is being credited with preventing what could have been a devastating highway crash after stepping in to control their school bus when the driver suddenly lost consciousness, turning an ordinary afternoon route into a life-or-death emergency.

The bus, carrying roughly 40 students from Hancock Middle School in Hancock County, had just merged onto a four-lane highway on April 22 when the situation escalated in seconds.

What began as a routine trip home quickly turned chaotic when the driver, 46-year-old Leah Taylor, suffered a severe asthma attack and attempted to reach her medication before blacking out behind the wheel.

In the span of moments, the bus began drifting out of its lane, prompting immediate action from students onboard.

Without hesitation or formal direction, several children moved toward the front of the vehicle as others prepared to call for help, preventing panic from taking over the cabin.

The most critical response came from a small group of students who divided responsibilities almost instinctively.

Twelve-year-old Jackson Casnave, seated directly behind the driver, rushed forward when he saw the bus veering off course and grabbed the wheel to stabilize its direction.

At the same time, 12-year-old Darrius Clark moved to assist with braking, helping slow and control the vehicle as it approached the median.

Clark’s 13-year-old sister, Kayleigh, ran from the back of the bus and dialed 911 while trying to relay information through the noise and confusion.

Together, their coordinated actions helped guide the bus safely onto a median and bring it to a stop before it left the roadway, Mississippi Today reported.

Other students also played key roles in stabilizing the emergency response inside the bus.

Fifteen-year-old Destiny Cornelius noticed that Taylor was still holding a nebulizer and used it to help administer emergency medication, while 13-year-old McKenzy Finch assisted by supporting the driver and grabbing her phone to alert district transportation officials.

What began as scattered reactions quickly became an improvised but organized effort to secure the scene and care for the unconscious driver.

Officials later confirmed that Taylor’s medical episode was the catalyst for the near-disaster, noting that she lost consciousness after experiencing breathing complications consistent with a severe asthma attack.

She has since recovered following treatment.

Authorities say the outcome could have been far more serious if not for the students’ rapid response, particularly given the bus’s position on a busy highway at the time of the incident.

Security and transportation officials emphasized that the vehicle’s movement, combined with driver incapacitation, created conditions where even a few seconds of delay could have resulted in a collision or rollover.

School staff and administrators praised the students during a schoolwide recognition event, describing their actions as unusually composed for their age and critical in preventing injury or loss of life.

Principal Melissa Saucier said the students demonstrated courage under pressure, noting that they did not wait for adult intervention once the emergency began unfolding, ABC News reported.

Taylor also expressed gratitude after her recovery, crediting the students with saving both her life and the lives of everyone onboard.

“They’re the ones that saved my life and everybody else’s on that bus,” she said.

The incident has since drawn broader attention to school transportation safety and emergency preparedness, with officials highlighting how quickly medical emergencies can escalate in transit environments.

While investigations continue into the circumstances of the driver’s medical episode, the focus for the community has largely centered on the outcome: a potential tragedy averted by a group of students who acted without hesitation when it mattered most.
