Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and her longtime fiancé Riley Roberts have reportedly ended their romantic relationship after roughly 15 years together, with insiders claiming the congresswoman’s rapid political rise contributed to growing tensions between the couple.
Ocasio-Cortez, 36, and Roberts, 38, are understood to have split in February, according to the Daily Mail, which cited a former Democratic operative familiar with the situation.
Neither Ocasio-Cortez nor Roberts has publicly confirmed the reported breakup.
The former Democratic operative told the outlet that Ocasio-Cortez is currently stepping away from romance while concentrating on her political future, which could include a potential run for Senate or president.
Another source, who previously worked on Capitol Hill and socialized with the couple, claimed Ocasio-Cortez’s emergence as one of the most recognizable politicians in the country created a difficult power imbalance in their relationship.
“I’m not surprised they broke up,” the source said.
The source described that imbalance as “very, very toxic” and suggested Roberts may have struggled with remaining outside the spotlight as his fiancée’s political career continued to grow.
“Rare is the man who is able to put himself in the back seat to his wife’s political career,” the source said.
However, others who knew the couple offered a considerably warmer description of their relationship.
A former Ocasio-Cortez staffer said the two appeared genuinely affectionate when their relationship was going well.
“They reminded me a little bit of my grandparents in their affectionate nature. So when it was working, it was beautiful,” the former staffer said.
“You know when people get together young. Life is life. Life happens. I hope they’re happy.”
The former Democratic operative also claimed Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts remain close despite no longer being romantically involved.
“They eat together a lot. They are close friends, but it’s no longer a romantic relationship,” the source said.
Questions surrounding the couple’s status had been growing in recent months.
Ocasio-Cortez has appeared publicly without her engagement ring and recently revealed that she had begun the process of freezing her eggs, saying the decision helped her feel “more in control of my life.”
She has not indicated that her decision to freeze her eggs was connected to the reported breakup.
When the Daily Mail approached Ocasio-Cortez’s mother, Blanca Ocasio-Cortez, about the status of her daughter’s relationship, she declined to provide an answer.
“I can’t comment,” she said.
Asked specifically whether her daughter remained with Roberts, she responded, “I really cannot talk, I can’t say anything.”
Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts’ relationship dates back to their years at Boston University, where they reportedly met through a student discussion group called “Coffee & Conversations.”
The pair separated after college when Roberts returned to Arizona but reportedly rekindled their relationship around 2015.
Roberts later moved to New York and supported Ocasio-Cortez as she mounted the 2018 congressional campaign that transformed her into a national political figure.
Ocasio-Cortez stunned the Democratic establishment by defeating longtime Rep. Joe Crowley in the primary before winning the general election and becoming the youngest woman elected to Congress at the time.
Roberts largely remained outside the public spotlight as Ocasio-Cortez’s political profile exploded.
The couple eventually became engaged during a trip to Puerto Rico in April 2022.
Despite the engagement, they never married.
Roberts’ unusual position as Ocasio-Cortez’s longtime partner but not legal spouse also became the subject of political scrutiny over the years.
In 2019, critics accused Ocasio-Cortez of placing Roberts on the congressional payroll after it emerged that he had an official House email address.
Her office denied that Roberts was a congressional employee and said the account was provided so he could access her calendar.
That same year, a conservative organization filed a complaint alleging that Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign improperly directed $6,000 to Roberts. The payments were ultimately found to be legitimate, according to the Daily Mail, and no penalties were imposed.
Additional scrutiny emerged after Roberts accompanied Ocasio-Cortez to the 2021 Met Gala, where she famously wore a white “Tax the Rich” dress.
The matter eventually became part of a House Ethics Committee investigation.
The committee concluded that violations surrounding the event were not “knowing and willful,” although Ocasio-Cortez was required to reimburse thousands of dollars related to the event, including the value of Roberts’ meal. The matter was subsequently closed.
Roberts also accompanied Ocasio-Cortez on an official trip to Italy in 2022 and reportedly received travel benefits while being identified as her “spouse,” prompting additional criticism.
One source familiar with the couple suggested that years of political attention surrounding Roberts and his place in Ocasio-Cortez’s world could have contributed to pressure on their relationship.
“The marvel is that it lasted as long as it did,” the source said.
“It’s hard to be a political spouse. Period. You are going to sacrifice your career and your aspirations to your partner’s aspirations.”
The reported breakup comes as Ocasio-Cortez faces increasing speculation about her political future.
The former Democratic operative cited by the Daily Mail suggested she could challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his New York Senate seat rather than seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
