Hegseth Says ‘Era of Betrayal is Over’ After Ending Requirement Impacting U.S. Troops

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stepped to the podium Tuesday with a message aimed squarely at the rank and file: the military’s flu shot requirement is finished.

A memo bearing Monday’s date went out to service members across all branches, reclassifying flu vaccination status from compulsory to “voluntary” — a single word carrying significant weight for millions in uniform.

Hegseth took to social media to amplify the shift, writing that “The War Department is once again restoring freedom to our Joint Force.”

The announcement carried a sharp edge directed at the Biden years. Hegseth charged that the previous Pentagon leadership had turned on its own people: “Under the disastrous Biden administration, this Pentagon waged an unrelenting war on our warriors on many fronts, including when it came to denying them simple medical autonomy and the freedom to express their religious convictions.”

Hegseth argued the prior mandates had forced an unconscionable choice on the men and women serving the country: “Our men and women in uniform were forced to choose between their conscience and their country, even when those decisions posed no threat to our military readiness.”

He connected the flu vaccine reversal directly to the firestorm that preceded it: “You know what I’m talking about. What happened? COVID-19 and the vaccine. No more.”

Four words punctuated the end of what Hegseth described as a dark chapter: “That era of betrayal is over.”

Hegseth cast the move as one piece of a larger realignment happening inside the building under President Trump: “Under President Trump, the War Department continues to take decisive action to once again restore freedom and strength to our joint force. We’re seizing this moment to discard any absurd overreaching mandates that only weaken our warfighting capabilities.”

He questioned the fundamental logic behind applying a universal flu shot requirement to every service member in every corner of the globe: “The notion that a flu vaccine must be mandatory for every service member, everywhere, in every circumstance, at all times, is just overly broad and not rational.”

The replacement policy, as Hegseth spelled it out, leans on individual judgment rather than top-down compulsion: “Our new policy is simple: If you, an American warrior entrusted to defend this nation, believe that the flu vaccine is in your best interest, then you are free to take it; you should. But we will not force you, because your body, your faith, and your convictions are not negotiable.”

Hegseth called it exactly the kind of thinking his department intends to apply going forward: “It’s the kind of common-sense approach we are undertaking in this department.”

He closed with a pledge directed at both the troops and the broader American public: “Rest assured that under President Trump, the War Department will always honor our brave warriors and do everything we can to restore the American people’s trust in their military for generations to come.”

The COVID-19 vaccine mandate under the Biden administration left a visible scar on military personnel numbers.

More than 8,000 service members lost their positions through involuntary discharge after refusing vaccination, a figure documented in an official War Department news release.

Tuesday’s action did not materialize without precedent. Fox News noted the announcement brings to completion a policy rollback that had already been set in motion.

Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg signed a memo in May 2025 drawing a line around reservists — under that earlier directive, only those called to active duty for 30 days or longer would face any flu vaccine requirement at all.

With Tuesday’s memo, that threshold disappears entirely, leaving the decision in the hands of the individual service member.
