FBI Announces ‘Changes’ That ‘Are Working’

A nation long accustomed to bracing for bad news on crime got something entirely different this week. Federal law enforcement data shows the United States pulled off a dramatic reduction in violent offenses in 2025 — one for the history books.

The FBI released preliminary findings from its annual crime tracking effort, and the story they tell stretches back nearly nine decades to find a comparison.

Murder and non-negligent manslaughter fell by more than 18% last year compared to 2024. The last time the country saw a single-year homicide plunge of that magnitude, Franklin D. Roosevelt was in the White House.

Robbery tumbled nearly 18.5% — a decline running almost neck-and-neck with the murder drop. Rape fell by roughly 8%, while aggravated assault posted a decline of more than 7%.

Taken together, violent crime across all categories sank approximately 9.3% in a single calendar year.

Property crime did not sit out the trend. Burglaries, thefts, motor vehicle stolen, and arson incidents collectively fell an estimated 12.4% between 2024 and 2025.

FBI Director Kash Patel stepped forward with a direct statement on what the bureau believes is driving the results.

“The 2025 crime data in this report shows the single largest decrease in violent crime and murder since 1937 – as well as huge decreases across the board in terms of aggravated assault, rape, and robbery,” Patel said.

He pointed to internal changes at the bureau as a contributing factor. “Over the last 14 months, we made major transformations at the FBI, and these results show those changes are working,” Patel added.

The data powering the report came from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, which drew on submissions from more than 17,000 law enforcement agencies — a figure representing about 96% of all policing activity in the country.

Despite the sweeping declines, the raw numbers still describe a nation processing significant levels of criminal activity.

Roughly 1.1 million fewer violent crimes occurred in 2025 than in 2024. Property crime incidents fell by approximately 5.2 million year-over-year.

Yet the cadence of crime remained relentless. A violent offense took place somewhere in the country every 28 seconds throughout the year. A murder occurred every 37 minutes. A rape was reported every four minutes.

Property crimes struck every six seconds on average — a burglary every 47 seconds, a motor vehicle theft every 46.

Law enforcement agencies cleared approximately 47% of violent crimes through arrests, accounting for more than 400,000 incidents.

For property crime, the clearance rate sat at roughly 17%, covering approximately 868,000 offenses.

The toll on officers who work those cases was severe. Fifty-three law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2025.

More than 90,000 were assaulted while on the job. Another 28 died in on-duty accidents unrelated to violence.

The FBI’s comprehensive annual crime report covering 2025 in full is scheduled for release later this year.
