A new revelation involving Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) former husband has brought renewed attention to the Minnesota Democrat’s controversial marriage history as questions surrounding their relationship continue to circulate.
Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the British citizen who married Omar in 2009, publicly identified himself as gay in an academic paper published in August 2026.
The disclosure comes amid reports of renewed federal scrutiny of Omar’s immigration history and longstanding allegations that her marriage to Elmi was arranged to help him obtain legal status in the U.S.
More controversially, critics have alleged that Elmi is actually Omar’s brother, an accusation she has repeatedly denied.
The revelation about Elmi emerged from an academic essay titled Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya.
Elmi, who is now a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol in England, discussed how his identity influenced his research into violence against LGBTQ individuals.
“As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral,” he wrote.
The statement offers an unusually personal disclosure from someone who has largely remained outside the public spotlight despite years of political controversy surrounding his former marriage.
Elmi’s academic work focuses on the challenges of conducting research into violence, identity and vulnerability.
But the reference to his sexuality has drawn particular attention because of the questions that have surrounded his relationship with Omar.
The two legally married in February 2009 while Omar was living in Minnesota.
Their relationship eventually ended, with Elmi reportedly leaving the state in 2012. The couple finalized their divorce in 2017.
For years, political critics have questioned whether the marriage was genuine.
Some have claimed that Omar married Elmi to help him secure immigration benefits, while others have gone further by alleging that the two share a biological relationship.
Neither allegation has been conclusively established.
The controversy has also involved Omar’s relationship with Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she shares children.
According to reporting by the New York Post, an acquaintance of Hirsi claimed that he had privately described Elmi as Omar’s brother from London.
The unidentified individual also alleged that Omar’s legal marriage to Elmi was connected to immigration paperwork while she maintained a marriage to Hirsi under Islamic law, per Trending Politics.
Those assertions remain unverified.
Nevertheless, the details of Omar’s marriage history have continued attracting scrutiny throughout her congressional career.
Her relationship with Hirsi preceded her legal marriage to Elmi. She later divorced Elmi and subsequently married Hirsi.
The timeline has repeatedly become a subject of political controversy, particularly among critics who believe the circumstances surrounding the marriage deserve further examination.
Recent reports have added another dimension to the dispute.
Federal investigators are reportedly examining allegations involving Omar’s immigration history, including questions surrounding her former marriage.
Earlier inquiries into the alleged arrangement reportedly did not result in criminal charges, with one investigation said to have encountered statute-of-limitations obstacles.
However, an investigation does not establish criminal wrongdoing, and the reporting provided identifies no criminal finding against Omar.
The congresswoman has consistently rejected allegations that she married a relative or entered a fraudulent marriage.
During an October interview with MS NOW, Omar was directly questioned about whether Elmi could be related to her.
“Not to my knowledge,” she responded.
Her answer attracted criticism and renewed public discussion, although it did not establish the truth of the allegations.
Elmi’s latest disclosure adds a personal detail to that debate, but it does not resolve the central questions.
Identifying as gay does not prove that a previous heterosexual marriage was fraudulent, nor does it demonstrate that the former spouses are related.
The academic essay makes no claim that Elmi married Omar for immigration purposes.
What it does establish is that Elmi publicly described himself as a gay man while discussing his experiences as a researcher.
The disclosure arrives as Omar continues confronting questions about her past relationships and immigration history.
With the congresswoman maintaining her denials and no conclusive public evidence establishing the disputed family relationship, the allegations remain unresolved.
Elmi’s statement has nevertheless returned the former couple’s marriage to the spotlight, bringing another round of attention to a controversy that has followed Omar for years.
