Reaction arrived swiftly and unforgivingly. Critics zeroed in on Emhoff’s facial expression, calling it strange and ill-suited for a public figure attempting to project national pride.
A skeptical X user captured the sentiment shared by many, writing, “I can’t believe he looked at this selfie and said to himself, ‘Yep, this is the one,’ and posted it.”
Another commenter took a more direct approach, questioning both members of the couple with the message, “Did you or Kamala think this was a good pic?”

This burst of online attention represents something of a departure for Emhoff, who has largely operated outside public view since his wife’s decisive defeat in last year’s presidential contest.

According to sources who spoke with the Daily Mail, the property upgrade stemmed from heightened security concerns. Those worries reportedly grew more acute after Trump ordered the removal of Harris’s Secret Service detail back in September of last year.
Even as Harris has gradually reemerged in public settings, her husband’s absence from her side has been conspicuous.
Throughout her sprawling 33-city tour promoting her book “107 Days” — in which she picked apart her failure to carry a single swing state and lost the popular vote nationally, while griping about insufficient campaign time — Emhoff was rarely spotted alongside her.

Harris, meanwhile, has kept busy elsewhere. With 2028 speculation swirling, she has embarked on a press circuit centered on her memoir and her tenure in Washington.
One such stop, an interview with former CNN host Don Lemon, generated its own controversy last month after online observers dismissed her answers as rambling and incoherent.
The exchange centered on Harris’s philosophical take on the concept of hope.
“I really, truly believe this. We each have light inside of us. And we need to know that that is what inspires our hope as much as anything external to ourselves,” she told Lemon.
She went on: “And when we feel that, and not allow an election or an individual to dampen that light, and instead light – let that light carry us in particular moments of darkness, that, that we not only act on that hope, but we inspire that hope in each other.”
Harris concluded her thought by stating, “And, in particular, at this moment, it is so important that we not only have hope, but that we understand that that should be a verb.”
Throughout the response, Lemon sat largely motionless, offering scant reaction as Harris worked through her answer.
Representatives for Emhoff have not yet responded to the Daily Mail’s request for comment regarding the backlash to his post.
