Former President Barack Obama said ongoing political involvement during President Donald Trump’s administration has created strain within his marriage to former first lady Michelle Obama.
Obama discussed the tension during an interview with The New Yorker published this week while reflecting on his continued role in national politics after leaving office in 2017.
“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,” Obama said during the interview discussing frustrations within the household over his political activity.
Obama added that his continued public involvement “does create a genuine tension in our household” and said the situation has frustrated Michelle Obama as he remains active in Democratic Party politics.
The former president acknowledged he has become one of President Donald Trump’s most visible critics during Trump’s second administration despite historical norms that typically keep former presidents less politically active after leaving office.
Early in Trump’s first term, Obama largely avoided directly confronting his successor publicly. Over time, however, the former president increased his criticism of Trump administration policies and political messaging.
Obama told the magazine he believed Trump’s “recklessness” forced him to become more outspoken on political issues affecting the country and Democratic Party priorities nationwide.
According to the interview, Obama opposed Trump administration decisions involving withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement and efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, the signature domestic policy achievement of Obama’s presidency.
Obama said his expanded role in politics required him to become involved “more than I would have preferred” during the years following his departure from the White House.
The former president has remained a major Democratic Party figure, frequently speaking about voting rights, election laws and congressional redistricting efforts supported by Democrats across multiple states.
Obama recently urged voters in Virginia to support a ballot initiative redrawing congressional districts in ways Democrats argued would create fairer representation throughout the state.
Posts published on Obama’s X account supporting the measure reportedly generated more than 220 million combined views, according to publicly available engagement figures on the platform, per Fox News.
“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy,” Obama wrote in one March post criticizing Republican-led redistricting efforts in several states ahead of midterm elections.
Michelle Obama has also remained publicly active during Trump’s presidency, regularly appearing on podcasts and media programs where she has criticized administration policies and political rhetoric.
The couple recently addressed online rumors about their marriage during an appearance on Michelle Obama’s “IMO” podcast, where they joked publicly about speculation involving possible divorce or separation.
Obama previously acknowledged marital difficulties in 2025 after Michelle Obama did not accompany him to former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral or President Donald Trump’s second inauguration ceremonies earlier that year.
