Prank Goes Terribly Wrong, Beloved Teacher Dies

A 40-year-old Georgia high school math teacher is dead following a late-night prank that ended in tragedy outside his Gainesville home on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Now Georgia reported that Jason Hughes, a math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School, stepped outside his residence on North Gate Drive at approximately 11:40 p.m. after five teenagers arrived to cover his trees in toilet paper.

The prank, referred to as “rolling” a house, was part of a school tradition known as “junior-senior wars” that takes place regularly during that time of year.

Rather than an angry confrontation, Hughes was “excited and waiting to catch them in the act,” according to his wife, Laura, who spoke to The New York Times.

When Hughes came outside, the group ran to two vehicles to leave the area.Because it had been raining, Hughes slipped and fell into the road right as 18-year-old Jayden Wallace drove by in his pickup truck, running over the teacher.

The teens stopped and attempted to help Hughes after he was hit. Deputies arrived at the scene at 11:40 p.m. and Hughes was taken to a hospital by the fire department, reported NBC News. He later died from his injuries.

Arrested at the scene were Jayden Ryan Wallace, Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz.

Investigators with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said the driver, identified as Jayden Ryan Wallace, faces felony charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving, along with misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and littering.

NewsNation said that Owens, Hucks, Luque, and Cruz were charged with criminal trespass and littering on private property.

Under Georgia law, a first-degree vehicular homicide conviction tied to a serious traffic violation carries a prison sentence of three to fifteen years.

Hughes had spent nearly eight years at North Hall High School. He previously taught for a decade in Gwinnett County before he and his wife moved to Gainesville. He and Laura both teach math at North Hall High School, Now Georgia said.

Hughes also served as the North Hall school director for the organization NG3 for almost eight years. NG3 focuses on building character in high school students through community service and mentorship.

North Hall High School head football coach Sean Pender said Hughes was a man of faith who believed in servant leadership and served as the team’s academic coach.

Pender said he felt Hughes’ absence acutely, including at a faculty leadership class Hughes had been scheduled to lead.

“I had to get up and replace him this morning, and you can’t replace Jason Hughes, nobody can,” Pender said, according to 11alive.

Hall County School District Superintendent Will Schofield said the district was heartbroken over Hughes’ death.

“Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father; a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues,” Schofield said, per NBC.

CBS News reported that the day before Hughes’ death, the Hall County school system posted a message urging students to refrain from any prom-season pranks resulting in property damage, warning of “serious consequences that can arise from engaging in destructive behavior.”

In the days following the incident, Hughes’ family issued a public statement calling for the charges against all five teenagers to be dropped.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students. This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children,” the statement read, per NBC.
