Cracker Barrel Enrages Customers After Ditching Southern Tradition

Cracker Barrel finds itself in hot water again with its loyal customer base after abandoning a cherished Southern tradition on New Year’s Day.

The restaurant chain has quietly eliminated black-eyed peas from its New Year’s Day menu, ending a practice that honored a longtime Southern custom.

According to legend, eating black-eyed peas on January 1st brings good health and fortune in the coming year.

This latest controversy comes just months after the company faced severe backlash in September 2025.

At that time, Cracker Barrel announced plans to modernize and remodel its restaurants with a minimalist corporate aesthetic.

The September proposal also included replacing the chain’s traditional logo featuring “old timer” Uncle Herschel with a simplified design.

Customer reaction was swift and fierce.

The company’s stock price dropped significantly in response to the modernization plans.

Facing mounting pressure from angry customers, Cracker Barrel fully retreated from the proposed changes.

Now the restaurant chain faces another public relations crisis over its decision to stop serving black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day.

The move has particularly upset customers throughout the South who view the tradition as an important cultural practice.

The Southern custom involves eating specific foods on New Year’s Day for good luck. Black-eyed peas symbolize good health, while collard greens represent wealth and prosperity.

Many families across the South have passed down this tradition for generations.

One outraged customer said on X, “Now I find out Cracker Barrel no longer serves Black Eyed Peas on New Year’s Day.;

“The woman at the head of this thing needs to be fired,” they added.

“She’s done nothing but causes problems since she took over by the way lady if you’re reading this your insights don’t work.”

Another angry customer wrote, “Seems to me like you idiots haven’t learned a damned thing.  Glad I decided to keep my family out of your new look and new menu.  Cracker Barrel used to be a good place to go.  Not so much anymore.”

A third said, “One more example, albeit a small one, of white liberal women destroying America as we know it.”

“In this case, Sarah Moore threw the long-standing tradition of serving black-eyed peas on New Year’s out the window,” they continued. “Cracker Barrel hasn’t changed their spots.”

Cracker Barrel faced mounting criticism from longtime customers last month who said the restaurant chain has abandoned the quality that made it a staple of American dining.

Patrons across the country voiced concerns about declining food standards, pointing to changes in preparation methods that they say have stripped away the authenticity the brand once promised.

The restaurant has shifted away from traditional cooking methods in favor of efficiency-focused processes that critics say sacrifice taste and quality, the Wall Street Journal reported.
