Christmas Nightmare Unfolds as Routine Hobby Sparks Family Tragedy

A tragic domestic dispute in Lakeland, Florida, turned deadly this past week, leaving a family devastated and prompting renewed concern over the risks of household conflicts.

Authorities reported that 47-year-old Jason Kenney allegedly shot and killed his wife, Crystal Kenney, before wounding his 13-year-old stepdaughter during an argument over a Monday Night Football game.

The violent incident unfolded quickly, highlighting how ordinary disagreements can escalate when compounded by substance use and emotional strain.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described the events as both sudden and chilling.

Investigators said Kenney had been drinking when tensions erupted, prompting Crystal to instruct her 12-year-old son to escape to a neighbor’s home and call 911.

While fleeing, the boy reportedly heard gunfire from inside his home, immediately alerting authorities to the seriousness of the situation, KIRO 7 reports.

Responding deputies discovered Crystal Kenney deceased in the living room from a gunshot wound.

Her 13-year-old stepdaughter had sustained two gunshot injuries, including one to the face, and was transported to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition.

The couple’s one-year-old daughter remained unharmed, as did the 12-year-old son who had raised the alarm.

Following the shootings, Kenney fled the scene and reportedly called his sister in New York, admitting he had “done something terrible” and expressing a refusal to be imprisoned.

Law enforcement tracked him to a property owned by his late father in Lake Wales, where he had barricaded himself inside a shed.

Upon entering, deputies reportedly heard a gunshot and discovered Kenney had taken his own life, according to ABC 20.

Authorities also recovered a note from Crystal Kenney addressed to her husband, urging him to confront his substance use and seek spiritual guidance.

“You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God,” the note reportedly read, per The Blaze.

Sheriff Judd painted a vivid contrast between the family’s usual domestic life—decorated for the holidays with a Christmas tree and gifts—and the sudden, horrific violence that shattered it.

Experts say the tragedy illustrates the lethal potential of domestic conflicts, particularly when alcohol, mental health struggles or substance use are involved.

Each year, thousands of Americans are affected by domestic violence, and law enforcement officials stress the importance of early intervention, community awareness and supportive resources for families at risk.

The incident also highlights the need for vigilance during high-stress periods, such as holidays, when tensions can flare and conflicts intensify.

Law enforcement confirmed that aside from the critically injured stepdaughter, the surviving children were unharmed.

Authorities are continuing to investigate all aspects of the incident, working closely with social services to provide care and support for the family.

Community members have expressed shock and grief over the events, with many emphasizing the importance of resources and programs that can help families manage conflict before it escalates to tragedy.

As Lakeland authorities continue their investigation and outreach, the case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences domestic disputes can have when emotions, substance abuse and lack of intervention converge.

It underscores the urgent need for families and communities to remain vigilant, ensure open communication, and seek help when warning signs appear, particularly for vulnerable children caught in the middle of domestic strife.
