Big Name Sparks Betting Markets Surge After Teasing 2028 Presidential Run

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has seen his odds of winning the 2028 presidential election climb to 22 percent on the prediction market Polymarket after indicating he is giving serious consideration to launching a White House campaign.

The latest figures as of Sunday show Newsom in second place on the betting platform.

Vice President JD Vance currently holds the lead with 29 percent odds of winning the presidency.

Other potential contenders trail further behind.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) registers at 8 percent on the market.

President Donald Trump appears on the list at 4.3 percent. However, Trump will not be eligible to seek the presidency again due to constitutional term limits after completing his second term in office, unless Steve Bannon and company are able to produce some sort of workaround.

Newsom addressed the possibility of a presidential run during an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS.

The governor acknowledged he is considering a campaign following the 2026 midterm elections.

When the interviewer asked whether he had given the prospect “serious thought,” Newsom provided a direct response. “I’d be lying otherwise,” he stated.

The governor’s current term leading California is set to conclude in January 2027.

State term limits prohibit him from running for the governorship again.

During the CBS interview, Newsom discussed the upcoming election cycle in broader terms.

“I’d be lying otherwise,” Newsom replied, and that it will ultimately be up to voters to decide.

Political observers have long identified Newsom as a possible Democratic presidential candidate.

He has steadily expanded his visibility and influence beyond California’s borders in recent years.

The governor has intensified his national outreach efforts in recent months.

Earlier this year, he launched a podcast that features guests representing both major political parties.

Newsom has also shifted his approach on social media platforms.

His online presence has become more aggressive and confrontational, adopting tactics reminiscent of President Trump’s communication style.

In April, Newsom offered critical observations about the current state of the Democratic Party.

He suggested the party faces fundamental challenges regarding its identity and strategic direction.

“I don’t know what the party is,” Newsom told The Hill during that conversation.

“I’m still struggling with that.”

The California governor emphasized the need for internal examination within Democratic ranks.

He stated that a period of self-reflection and accountability must occur following the party’s recent electoral defeats.

“If you don’t learn the lessons of the past, you will repeat them,” Newsom warned, pointing to the importance of drawing conclusions from previous setbacks.

Failed Democrat candidate Kamala Harris has also hinted she’s planning another run for the White House.

Resist the Mainstream outlined that in a recent interview with the BBC, Harris said she’s not finished with politics.

“I am not done,” she said, calling her career “a life of service” that’s “in my bones.”

Harris also said she believes her grand-nieces will see the country elect its first female president “in their lifetime, for sure.”

When pressed if she was talking about herself, Harris answered, “possibly.”
