Woke Mayor’s Unthinkable Reaction After Girl’s Viral Bus Slaughter Fuels Outrage

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles is receiving significant criticism following her response to the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee on public transit.

The mayor’s comments have drawn backlash for emphasizing mental health concerns rather than public safety measures.

The victim, Iryna Zarutska, was killed in late August while riding a light rail train in Charlotte.

The young woman had recently arrived in the United States seeking refuge from the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The suspect in the case has been identified as 29-year-old Decarlos Brown, who authorities say had no previous connection to Zarutska.

Brown allegedly carried out the attack without provocation or apparent motive.

In her initial public statement regarding the murder, Mayor Lyles focused on the suspect’s apparent mental health struggles.

She suggested that traditional law enforcement approaches would not address underlying issues.

“We will never arrest our way out of issues such as homelessness and mental health,” Lyles stated, according to WCNC

The mayor drew comparisons between mental health conditions and physical ailments in her remarks.

“Mental health disease is just that — a disease like any other that needs to be treated with the same compassion, diligence and commitment as cancer or heart disease,” Lyles continued in her statement to local media outlets.

The mayor also defended the safety record of Charlotte’s public transportation system despite the fatal incident.

She characterized the transit system as being safe “by and large” for regular users.

Recently released surveillance footage from the Charlotte Area Transit System revealed disturbing details about the attack.

The video shows Brown sitting behind Zarutska on the train before launching his assault.

The footage captures Brown suddenly producing a pocket knife and stabbing the victim multiple times without warning.

After completing the attack, Brown was seen walking away from the scene with blood visible on both his knife and hands.

Mayor Lyles addressed the release of the surveillance video in a subsequent statement to the community.

She thanked media outlets and residents for choosing not to widely distribute the graphic footage out of respect for the victim’s family.

“The video of the heartbreaking attack that took Iryna Zarutska’s life is now public. I want to thank our media partners and community members who have chosen not to repost or share the footage out of respect for Iryna’s family,” Lyles said, according to WCNC.

The mayor acknowledged the tragic nature of the incident in her more recent comments. “This was a senseless and tragic loss. My prayers remain with her loved ones as they continue to grieve through an unimaginable time,” she stated.

Lyles also reflected on broader questions of public safety in Charlotte following the incident. “Like so many of you, I’m heartbroken — and I’ve been thinking hard about what safety really looks like in our city. I remain committed to doing all we can to protect our residents and ensure Charlotte is a place where everyone feels safe,” she continued.

Brown has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with Zarutska’s death. However, this latest charge represents just one entry in an extensive criminal record spanning more than a decade.

Court records indicate that Brown has spent most of his adult years cycling through the criminal justice system.

His documented offenses date back to 2011 and include multiple serious felonies, according to the New York Post.

His previous convictions include charges for felony larceny, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and making criminal threats.

Brown had also served a five-year prison sentence for armed robbery before his recent release.

Following his release from prison, Brown was arrested again within months for allegedly assaulting his sister.

Earlier this year, he faced additional charges for abusing the 911 emergency system after making bizarre claims about foreign materials controlling his behavior.

A GoFundMe campaign established by Zarutska’s family highlighted her recent arrival in America.

The fundraising page noted that she had come to the United States seeking “safety from the war and hoping for a new beginning.”

“Tragically, her life was cut short far too soon,” the family’s fundraiser stated, emphasizing the cruel irony of her death after escaping war-torn Ukraine.
