The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed the state’s first fatality linked to bird flu, identifying the H5N1 strain as the cause.
The patient, who was over 65 years old, reportedly had pre-existing medical conditions. Health officials believe the individual contracted the virus through exposure to a mix of wild birds and a non-commercial backyard poultry flock.
At this time, no additional cases have been reported, and the department has found no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the virus.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
