President Donald Trump is moving to temporarily increase tariff-free beef imports in an effort to lower food costs as Republicans face mounting political pressure ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump will allow 300,000 tons of ground beef to enter the US without tariffs over the next three months as consumers continue to face elevated grocery and fuel prices.
The average price of uncooked ground beef reached $7.12 per pound in July, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data cited by the Daily Mail. That represents a 9.4% increase from the same period last year.
Trump announced Friday that he had received a “commitment” that beef would be sold for 25% less than current market prices.
“As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again,” he added.
Trump did not identify which countries would receive tariff waivers under the plan or who had committed to selling beef at the lower price.
It also remains unclear when consumers could begin seeing lower prices at grocery stores or whether retailers would pass the entire reduction on to shoppers.
The action comes as economic concerns increasingly threaten Republicans heading into November.
American households have faced higher costs during the past six months amid disruptions connected to the ongoing war with Iran.
Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that previously carried roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies, has been severely restricted during the conflict.
Although the US does not obtain a large share of its oil directly through the strait, disruptions have affected global crude prices.
Higher oil prices have increased costs for gasoline, diesel, transportation, manufacturing and shipping, with some businesses passing those expenses on to consumers.
The national average price of gasoline has climbed to approximately $4 per gallon, according to the Daily Mail.
The increases have created particular political concerns in Rust Belt battleground states that played an important role in Trump’s 2024 victory.
Democrats have tried to make rising prices a central issue in the midterm elections, blaming Trump’s tariffs and the prolonged conflict with Iran for putting pressure on household budgets, according to the Daily Mail.
Trump, meanwhile, has continued to blame former President Joe Biden for much of the country’s affordability problems.
The beef announcement represents one of the administration’s latest attempts to directly address prices before voters head to the polls.
Trump’s decision could increase the supply of imported beef during the coming months while domestic producers rebuild cattle inventories.
