President Donald Trump announced Thursday his decision to place Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the helm of efforts to secure the 2035 World Expo for Miami.
The president made the announcement through social media, emphasizing Florida’s desire to host the international event.
Trump expressed his complete backing for Miami as the prospective host city.
“The Great State of Florida has expressed strong interest in hosting the Expo in Miami, which I fully support,” Trump wrote in his post.
The president framed the potential Miami exposition as a significant achievement for the nation. He described the event as potentially marking “the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America.”
Trump designated Rubio to coordinate and advance the bid efforts.
The secretary of state is a Miami native, which the president highlighted in his announcement.
“I am appointing Miami native Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Chair the efforts of coordinating and advancing this exciting opportunity to convene the World,” Trump stated.
This latest appointment adds another responsibility to Rubio’s expanding list of duties. The secretary has accumulated several high-profile assignments beyond his primary diplomatic role.
Earlier this year, on February 3, 2025, the State Department revealed Rubio’s appointment as acting administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Less than two weeks later, on February 16, Trump announced another assignment for Rubio. The president named him acting archivist of the United States through a Truth Social post.
That announcement involved Jim Byron, whom Trump installed to handle National Archives operations on a daily basis. Rubio’s role as acting archivist represented yet another expansion of his responsibilities.
The assignments continued to accumulate in the following months.
On May 1, Trump revealed Rubio would assume the position of national security advisor on an interim basis.
The national security advisor role carries substantial weight in government operations. Rubio maintains his leadership of the State Department while fulfilling these interim duties.
The World Expo chairmanship represents the most recent addition to this growing collection of assignments.
Trump continues to turn to Rubio for visible political and policy initiatives across multiple government areas.
Rubio’s path to the secretary of state position began with his departure from the Senate. His exit from the upper chamber created a vacancy that required filling.
The Associated Press reported that Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis exercised his appointment power to address the open Senate seat. The governor selected Ashley Moody, who served as Florida’s attorney general at the time.
