President Donald Trump criticized former President Barack Obama’s presidential center on Saturday, posting an altered image on social media depicting the Chicago landmark surrounded by homeless encampments and trash.
Trump shared the image on Truth Social ahead of the scheduled June 19 opening of the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side.
The image appeared to be digitally generated and showed the center surrounded by tents and debris. Text added to the image read, “The Barack Hussein Obama Library, in 10 years, when fully matured!”
The post marked Trump’s latest criticism of the project, which has faced scrutiny over its design, cost and impact on surrounding neighborhoods.
The Obama Presidential Center, located in Jackson Park, is expected to serve as the headquarters of the Obama Foundation and include a museum, library branch, educational facilities and community programming spaces.
Construction of the center began after years of planning and legal challenges related to its location in the historic park.
According to reports, former President Obama played a direct role in shaping the project’s design and encouraged architects to pursue a more ambitious vision than initially proposed.
Architect Tod Williams told The New Yorker that Obama repeatedly urged the design team to think bigger and create a structure that would stand as both a civic space and a work of art.
Williams said Obama challenged architects to be bolder during planning sessions, sometimes making changes directly to design concepts.
The final project includes a 225-foot granite-clad tower that has become one of the center’s most recognizable features.
The structure has drawn mixed reactions from architecture critics and local residents.
Supporters describe the center as a modern civic landmark designed to inspire community engagement and public participation.
Critics have questioned the scale and appearance of the project, with some arguing that it does not fit naturally within Jackson Park’s historic landscape.
The project’s cost has also increased substantially since its early planning stages.
Initial estimates placed construction costs near $300 million. More recent figures have put the overall cost at approximately $850 million, reflecting expanded programming, construction expenses and additional design elements.
Despite the rising costs, the Obama Foundation has reported strong fundraising support. Foundation officials have said fundraising efforts have surpassed $1 billion.
The center will include exhibits focused on Obama’s presidency, community spaces, a teaching kitchen, recording studios and a Democracy in Action Lab intended to promote civic engagement.
The development has also generated debate among neighborhood residents and housing advocates.
Some local leaders have expressed concern that investment associated with the project could contribute to rising housing costs and displacement in surrounding communities, per the Daily Mail.
Foundation officials have said the center is intended to serve local residents while creating educational and economic opportunities.
The project has been closely associated with both Barack and Michelle Obama, who have emphasized youth engagement and community programming as central goals of the center.
The Obama Presidential Center is scheduled to open to the public on June 19.
Neither Obama nor the Obama Foundation immediately responded publicly to Trump’s social media post on Saturday.
The exchange highlights continuing political tensions between Trump and Obama, whose presidencies and policy agendas have often been subjects of sharp public disagreement.
