Trump Backs Plan to Put Thousands Directly Into Americans’ Pockets

President Donald Trump is supporting a Republican-backed bill that would deposit up to $1,500 directly into Americans’ Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), giving recipients funds for medical expenses rather than sending money to insurers.

The legislation, introduced by Senators Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Mike Crapo of Idaho, proposes $1,000 for Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollees aged 18 to 49 and $1,500 for those 50 to 64.

Payments would go directly to individual accounts, bypassing government programs and insurance companies, Trending Politics reports.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump praised the consumer-focused approach. “I like the concept. I don’t want to give the insurance companies any money,” he said. “They’ve been ripping off the public for years.”

He framed the measure as a way for Americans to control health care spending, adding, “The people will get the money, and they’re going to buy the health insurance that they want.”

Eligibility for the one-time payment is limited to ACA marketplace enrollees with bronze or catastrophic plans and household incomes up to 700 percent of the federal poverty level—$105,420 for a single filer and $218,400 for a family of four.

Silver, gold and platinum planholders, along with those covered by Medicare, Medicaid or employer-provided insurance, would not qualify.

The funds are restricted from being used for abortion or gender-transition procedures.

The bill allocates $10 billion for the HSA deposits, contingent on congressional approval. Republicans are highlighting the plan as part of their 2026 midterm strategy, emphasizing affordability and putting money directly in the hands of voters.

Trump has consistently emphasized health care, tariffs and economic policy during recent rallies, particularly in rural Pennsylvania, where supporters criticized former President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy.

Cassidy praised Trump’s involvement, saying, “Republicans want real solutions that actually make health care affordable and put money in families’ pockets. I applaud the president for his leadership on this issue.”

The legislation is set for a procedural vote in the Senate, where it will be considered alongside a Democratic proposal to extend ACA subsidies for three years, according to the New York Post.

At campaign events, Trump has connected the HSA initiative to broader efforts to reduce costs across the economy. Supporters say the program could help families manage expenses, while critics argue that structural ACA reforms are still needed.

The plan also aligns with Trump’s previous proposals to return funds to Americans via tariff rebates and other consumer-focused programs, emphasizing his approach to redirecting financial power away from large corporations and toward households.

By directing funds to Americans rather than insurers, the measure reflects Trump’s broader agenda of lowering systemic costs and expanding individual choice.

If enacted, it could provide financial relief to millions who meet income and plan requirements, while also shaping the national conversation on health care affordability heading into the 2026 midterms.

The legislation has drawn attention for its potential impact on millions of ACA users who rely on high-deductible or catastrophic plans, highlighting the disparities in current federal health care support.

Republicans argue that directly funding HSAs encourages personal responsibility and empowers Americans to make their own health care decisions, while opponents warn that broader reforms are necessary to address rising premiums and out-of-pocket costs comprehensively.

This proposal represents a key component of the GOP’s economic messaging, aiming to appeal to voters concerned about inflation, health care expenses and control over personal finances.

The outcome of the Senate vote will determine whether the initiative moves forward, with its potential influence on public opinion and midterm strategy likely to be closely watched.
