The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a nationwide initiative to enforce stricter standards for products labeled “Product of USA,” requiring companies to demonstrate compliance before using the designation.
The rule applies to meat, poultry, and egg products, stipulating that animals must be born, raised, harvested, and processed in the United States to qualify.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins described the move as a significant step toward transparency in the food supply chain.
“This new label is about enhancing competitiveness for our producers, our great American producers, by leveling the playing field and increasing transparency by truthful labeling,” Rollins said. “Consumers deserve clear, truthful labels. American ranchers deserve a level playing field, and that’s what we are delivering.”
Previously, meat from foreign sources could carry a U.S. label if it was merely packaged domestically, a loophole critics said misled consumers and placed domestic farmers at a disadvantage.
Under the updated rule, the “Product of USA” label remains voluntary but must meet verifiable standards. Noncompliance could result in enforcement actions from federal regulators.
Industry groups have praised the policy for protecting domestic producers, NewsNation reported.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association emphasized concerns that imported beef previously competed unfairly under U.S. labeling standards.
Farmers and ranchers say the clarified definition strengthens domestic production and gives consumers confidence in product origins.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the Trump administration to support family farms and strengthen U.S. agriculture.
Over the past decade, the country has lost more than 17 percent of family farms, a decline industry leaders attribute to unfair competition and regulatory hurdles.
According to Rollins, the new labeling standards reinforce the administration’s goal of promoting American agriculture while safeguarding consumer trust.
Other federal officials have expressed support. SBA Administrator Loeffler highlighted the connection between fair competition and economic growth.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. noted the importance of keeping “real food” central to the American diet, while EPA Administrator Zeldin framed the label as a win for rural communities, food security, and environmental stewardship.
North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven (R) said the policy provides transparency for consumers while giving U.S. ranchers a fair opportunity to compete in the market.
He praised the administration’s commitment to supporting domestic agriculture and rural economies.
The updated “Product of USA” standard is part of the administration’s October 2025 “Plan to Fortify the American Beef Industry.”
The plan emphasizes rebuilding domestic capacity, enhancing supply chain transparency, and ensuring that U.S. producers can compete amid rising global demand.
By enforcing these stricter labeling rules, federal officials aim to curb misleading marketing, reward American producers, and provide consumers with accurate information about the food they purchase.
Supporters argue the move strengthens the domestic supply chain, protects jobs in rural areas, and encourages producers to invest in fully U.S.-based operations.
As the policy takes effect nationwide, meat, poultry, and egg producers must demonstrate compliance to use the “Product of USA” label, ensuring that American consumers know the origin of the products they bring home.
The Trump administration emphasized that this initiative represents a victory for both domestic farmers and the families who rely on honest labeling.
