Alcorn State University in Mississippi was rocked by gunfire during its homecoming celebration tonight, leaving multiple people injured in what authorities are calling the latest in a troubling wave of school-related shootings across the state.
The university issued an emergency alert shortly after 7 p.m., urging students and staff to take shelter immediately.
Witnesses reported that shots rang out around 6:30 p.m. near Jack’s Grocery Store on campus.
One witness told local media, “There were so many shots, I lost count,” adding that at least two people had been struck, with one suffering life-threatening injuries.
Paramedics rushed victims from the scene, with at least one individual carried on a stretcher and another covered by a white sheet before emergency care resumed. Police were seen actively searching the area as investigations got underway.
University officials have not released further details about the victims or suspects involved.
The shooting is the third incident at school-related events in Mississippi this weekend. Earlier, a pregnant woman was among six people killed at a high school homecoming celebration in Leland, while two others were fatally shot during Heidelberg’s homecoming weekend.
Authorities continue to investigate and have sought public assistance in locating suspects, per the Daily Mail.
State Senator Derrick Simmons condemned the violence, noting the widespread circulation of firearms as a driving factor. “It’s just senseless gun violence. What we are experiencing now is just a proliferation of guns just being in circulation,” he said.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is aiding local and federal authorities with ongoing investigations, and Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) expressed condolences on social media.
“Our state is praying for the victims and their families, as well as the entire Heidelberg and Leland communities. Those responsible will be brought to justice,” he said.
Authorities across the Mississippi Delta continue to work to determine the full scope of the violence and ensure accountability for those involved.
The state of the individuals shot is currently unknown.
The tragic shooting in Mississippi marks the latest in a string of recent gun-related crimes.
As Resist the Mainstream previously reported, on Sept. 10, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated during an event at Utah University.
Just days later, a school shooting in Evergreen, Colorado, occurred. A 16-year-old was responsible for carrying out the heinous attack at Evergreen High School, leaving two students injured before fatally shooting himself, as NBC News reported.
