Bruce Willis remains deeply connected to his family as he continues living with frontotemporal dementia, according to an emotional update from his wife, Emma Heming Willis.
Heming Willis discussed the 71-year-old actor’s condition during an interview for the new MS NOW series “Because We Care with Richard Lui,” opening up about the realities of caring for her husband while emphasizing that the family continues to experience meaningful moments together.
“We have still so many beautiful moments of joy and connection,” Heming Willis said.
She said those moments are important to share because public conversations about dementia often focus almost entirely on loss and decline.
Heming Willis argued that portraying dementia only through a negative lens can leave both patients and caregivers feeling overlooked.
“When we think about that or don’t want to talk about dementia and put it in a corner, the person living with the disease and their caregiver aren’t seen, they aren’t supported,” she said.
Willis’ family first announced in 2022 that the “Die Hard” actor had been diagnosed with aphasia, a condition affecting communication abilities.
The family later revealed in 2023 that Willis had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, also known as FTD.
The diagnosis forced Willis and those closest to him to adjust to a dramatically different daily life.
Heming Willis said that adjustment has not eliminated every positive experience for the family.
“It’s important to know that it’s hard and it’s a terrible disease, but we have so many moments of joy and connection that aren’t your norm, but it’s okay,” she said.
She added that the family has learned how to adapt to Willis’ changing needs rather than expecting life to look the way it once did.
“We’ve learned to adapt and show up for Bruce,” Heming Willis said.
Willis and Heming Willis married in 2009 after meeting at a Los Angeles gym. They share two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn.
The actor also shares daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah with former wife Demi Moore.
Moore has remained close to Willis and has repeatedly joined other members of the family in supporting him publicly throughout his health struggles, per Trending Politics.
Willis made a rare appearance with relatives during daughter Tallulah’s wedding weekend in August.
Tallulah later shared a photograph featuring her father alongside her husband, describing it as “a tender moment” at the beginning of the wedding celebration.
Heming Willis has also spoken previously about a neurological condition called anosognosia, which can occur alongside FTD and other forms of dementia.
She explained that the symptom can prevent a person’s brain from recognizing or fully understanding the changes happening because of the disease.
Heming Willis said that behavior can sometimes be mistaken for denial when, in reality, the person may genuinely be unable to recognize the condition.
“People think this might be denial,” she said during an earlier podcast appearance, adding that “it’s just that their brain is changing.”
She has increasingly used her public platform to discuss caregiving, dementia awareness and the emotional burden placed on families dealing with neurodegenerative disease.
Her latest interview continues that approach, focusing not only on the difficulties surrounding Willis’ condition but also on the moments that remain valuable to the family.
Willis stepped away from acting after his original aphasia diagnosis became public, ending a career that spanned decades and included films such as “Die Hard,” “Pulp Fiction,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Armageddon” and “Unbreakable.”
Since then, his family has largely controlled updates about his health while continuing to spend time together privately.
Heming Willis said the family’s focus remains on supporting Willis and recognizing that connection can continue even as dementia changes the way those moments look.
