Swalwell Dealt Devastating Blow Amid Explosive Allegations

California’s political landscape was jolted over the weekend after Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell abruptly suspended his campaign for governor, bringing a turbulent and closely watched bid for statewide office to an unexpected halt.

Swalwell’s decision followed a rapidly intensifying political and legal storm that had been building for days.

In his public statement posted to X, he acknowledged the suspension of his campaign while addressing both supporters and critics.

“I am suspending my campaign for Governor,” he wrote. “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.”

He added, “I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

The move effectively ends a gubernatorial effort that had already been under strain, as reports of sexual misconduct allegations against Swalwell gained national attention.

Yesterday, Resist the Mainstream reported that multiple women have accused him of inappropriate conduct, including one allegation of rape.

He has denied all accusations, calling them false and disputing their credibility as they circulated through media coverage and political commentary.

In an additional public defense, Swalwell directly pushed back against the claims, stating, “These allegations of sexual assault are flat out false,” and adding, “They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything that I have.”

He characterized the accusations as unverified claims being amplified publicly, as scrutiny around his campaign intensified.

Even as he sought to defend himself, the political fallout quickly expanded beyond the allegations themselves.

One of his most significant financial supporters, billionaire businessman Stephen Cloobeck, moved to distance himself from the campaign entirely.

BizPac Review reported that Cloobeck publicly withdrew his support and expressed anger over the situation, stating, “I am no longer supporting Eric,” and adding, “F—ing tell everyone I’m a Libertarian. F— you, Democrat Party. I’m a Libertarian now.”

Cloobeck, who previously contributed $1 million to an independent committee backing Swalwell’s candidacy, has also suggested he may pursue legal avenues to recover his donation.

The reversal marked a sharp break from his earlier role as one of the campaign’s most visible and influential backers.

That collapse stands in stark contrast to Cloobeck’s prior public posture, when he described a close personal relationship with Swalwell and downplayed early concerns raised about the congressman.

In earlier remarks, he referred to him in familial terms as a “little brother,” a characterization that now highlights the depth of the reversal in their relationship.

With the campaign suspended, Swalwell’s immediate political future now centers on his continued role in Congress.

He has not resigned his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, leaving open questions about whether he can withstand ongoing scrutiny while remaining in federal office.

The broader political environment in California adds another layer of complexity, as candidates across the state navigate heightened polarization, donor sensitivity, and intensified media scrutiny.

Swalwell’s exit underscores how quickly a statewide campaign can collapse when legal allegations, financial withdrawals, and political pressure converge at the same time.
