Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) called on the Department of Justice to investigate organizations funded by George Soros, citing concerns over political violence.
Carter sent a letter on Thursday to Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting a “comprehensive and immediate” probe into the Open Society Foundations and other Soros-backed groups.
The investigation aims to determine if these organizations violated federal laws related to domestic terrorism, material support for violence, or targeting Americans based on political beliefs.
“The funding of organizations that engage in, support, or incite political violence must not be tolerated,” Carter wrote.
Carter’s letter referenced a Capital Research Center report showing Soros’ Open Society Foundations directed more than $80 million to groups allegedly involved in or endorsing activities meeting the FBI’s definition of domestic terrorism.
One group, the Center for Third World Organizing, received $400,000 and publicly stated it “threw down with people in the streets” during the 2020 George Floyd riots, per the Conservative Brief.
The report identified other radical groups under CTWO’s umbrella, including the Ruckus Society, whose materials have promoted tactics “may be outside of the law.”
The network also includes the BlackOUT Collective, which co-authored a pro-Hamas guide citing the Ruckus Society and glorifying the Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
Open Society Foundations provided $1.85 million to Dream Defenders, $18 million to the Movement for Black Lives, and $200,000 to Dissenters, another group involved in the pro-Hamas guide.
The Sunrise Movement received at least $2 million from the foundation and has promoted Stop Cop City/Defend the Atlanta Forest, which federal officials link to Antifa-associated anarchist activity.
Carter highlighted an “escalation in politically motivated violence from far-left extremist groups.”
He cited attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities and the September 10 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk by a man allegedly motivated by political hatred.
The Open Society Foundations responded, stating, “Our activities are peaceful and lawful, and our grantees are expected to abide by human rights principles and comply with the law.”
The foundation called the allegations “politically motivated attacks on civil society, meant to silence speech the administration disagrees with and undermine the First Amendment right to free speech.”
The Trump administration has begun an investigation into left-wing organizations suspected of funding violence.
FBI Director Kash Patel said Wednesday that the bureau is “following the money” behind Antifa and other far-left groups.
Patel described an “unprecedented financial investigation” targeting donor networks, funding mechanisms, and organizational links supporting domestic extremism.
Patel said the FBI is working with the Treasury Department to map accounts and entities financing Antifa operations across the U.S. and abroad.
“We are following the money. Money never lies,” Patel said. “That’s what it’s going to take to bring down this network of organized criminal thugs, gang bangers, and yes, domestic terrorists — because that’s what they are.”
