Shock Twist in Murder Case Involving DHS Worker

The 26-year-old UK-born suspect accused of a deadly Atlanta-area shooting spree was found unresponsive in his jail cell Tuesday evening, officials said.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported that Olaolukitan Adon Abel was located in his cell at approximately 6:48 p.m.

Jail staff initiated emergency medical response efforts, but he was pronounced dead at 7:17 p.m., OCG News reported.

An internal review is now underway, and the final cause of death will be determined following an autopsy by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Abel had been held in connection with a series of shootings on April 13 that spanned multiple locations in DeKalb County and nearby jurisdictions, leaving three people dead and another critically injured, as previously reported by Resist the Mainstream.

Investigators have described the attacks as unconnected in motive, with no known relationship between Abel and any of the victims.

One woman was shot outside a Checkers restaurant in Decatur during the early morning hours.

Another victim, Tony Matthews, was attacked while sleeping outside a Kroger grocery store in Brookhaven and later died from his injuries, according to USA Today.

The third victim, Lauren Bullis, worked for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General.

She was killed near her home while walking her dog, where she was struck by gunfire and stabbed.

DHS described Bullis as a dedicated federal employee who served in multiple roles within the agency and was known for her professionalism.

A fourth victim, a homeless man, survived after being shot multiple times during the same timeframe and remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators reconstructed Abel’s movements using surveillance footage, traffic cameras, and vehicle tracking data tied to a rental car that moved across multiple jurisdictions during the attacks.

Law enforcement later intercepted the vehicle in Troup County as part of a coordinated multi-agency operation involving Georgia State Troopers.

Inside the car, ammunition and shell casings were recovered and later matched to evidence from one of the crime scenes, according to officials involved in the case.

Abel was taken into custody and later charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, and multiple firearms offenses.

Prosecutors also cited a prior criminal history involving violent offenses against law enforcement officers and sexual battery convictions.

Court records show he previously pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers and had served probation in Georgia for misdemeanor sexual battery charges, according to USA Today.

Abel became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2022.

Investigators reiterated that the victims were not known to Abel and that the shootings occurred within hours of each other across different parts of the Atlanta area without any apparent connection.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the geographic spread of the attacks, the number of victims, and the involvement of a federal employee among those killed.

Following Abel’s death in custody, a formal investigation has been launched into the circumstances inside the jail. Surveillance footage, staff actions, and detention records are currently under review.

The broader investigation into the April 13 shootings remains active, with multiple agencies continuing to analyze evidence and reconstruct the suspect’s movements leading up to the attacks.
