The FBI is assisting local authorities following the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., after the longtime lawmaker died Saturday night at the age of 71 following what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.”
Graham’s office announced his death early Sunday, saying his family requested privacy during the difficult time. No official cause of death has been released.
Emergency responders were dispatched to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence Saturday evening after a 911 call reporting cardiac arrest, according to multiple reports. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Sunday that the bureau is assisting in the response.
“The FBI is assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available,” Patel wrote on X.
Neither the FBI nor local authorities have indicated that foul play is suspected, and officials have not announced the opening of a criminal investigation.
Graham’s death has generated widespread speculation online because of his recent international travel and prominent role on national security issues.
Just one day before his death, Graham was in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and visited a Ukrainian drone facility. The senator had been one of Congress’ strongest advocates for continued U.S. support for Ukraine throughout Russia’s invasion.
Graham was also a leading Republican voice on Iran policy and had frequently called for a hardline approach toward the Iranian government.
Following news of his death, Iranian state television reported on the senator’s passing, with one broadcaster making inflammatory remarks celebrating his death because of his longstanding criticism of Iran’s leadership.
Several commentators have urged authorities to conduct a thorough medical examination before drawing conclusions about the cause of death.
Megan Mobbs, director of the Center for American Safety & Security at the Independent Women’s Forum, noted that cardiac arrest describes how someone dies but not what caused the heart to stop.
She argued that a complete forensic autopsy, toxicology testing and consultation with federal authorities would help provide certainty given Graham’s national security role.
Other commentators pointed to Graham’s recent public appearances, noting he appeared healthy while speaking to reporters during his trip to Ukraine.
However, others cautioned against jumping to conclusions without evidence.
Townhall columnist Dustin Grage said he had been told by a source in South Carolina that Graham had dealt with blood pressure issues for decades and noted that the senator’s father also died from cardiac arrest at age 69, per the Daily Mail.
“I know the conspiracy theories won’t stop, but sometimes life just happens,” Grage wrote. “Not everything is a conspiracy.”
Radio host Dana Loesch echoed that sentiment, writing that sudden cardiac events are not uncommon and that people should avoid speculation before medical findings are released.
President Donald Trump led tributes to Graham, calling him “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known” and “a true American Patriot.”
Vice President J.D. Vance also honored the senator, saying Graham “fought like hell for the things he believed in.”
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) praised Graham’s service, saying that although they often disagreed politically, they maintained a productive working relationship on behalf of their state.
