See It: Ilhan Omar Begs and Cries

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) resurfaced in a social media video Tuesday night, making an emotional appeal for campaign donations just days after federal agents searched her Washington, D.C., residence as part of an investigation into alleged immigration fraud.

The Minnesota Democrat delivered the roughly one-minute message from the back seat of a moving vehicle, thanking supporters for their financial contributions and urging them to continue donating as she prepares for the November 3 midterm elections.

Omar’s appearance marked one of her first public video statements since Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant at her residence on October 12.

The congresswoman accused President Donald Trump and his administration of attempting to silence political opponents through federal investigations.

She thanked supporters for helping her “fight Trump and his administration for trying to intimidate me and so many other people right before the midterm elections.”

Omar insisted that the investigation would not prevent her from returning to the campaign trail.

“We know that they’re running scared, we’re not going to be intimidated, we’re not going to be silenced, we’re not going to be scared,” she declared.

The congresswoman also pledged to continue campaigning for Democrats nationwide while pressing for greater congressional oversight of the administration.

“I’ll be out there campaigning alongside all of you and making sure that we beat back all of this and that we win in the midterms — win the House, win the Senate and hold this administration accountable,” Omar continued.

However, the video also included a direct request for additional financial support.

Omar warned that the coming weeks would present significant challenges and urged viewers to contribute whatever amounts they could afford.

“Thank you so much again and please continue to support us,” she said.

“It is going to be a very expensive and challenging time and so we appreciate whether you’re able to send $5, $10, $20.”

She concluded the message by thanking supporters once again.

The fundraising appeal comes as federal investigators examine longstanding allegations surrounding Omar’s immigration history and the circumstances under which she obtained American citizenship.

During the October 12 search, agents reportedly seized her cellphone, passport, personal computers and notebooks.

The investigation reportedly concerns immigration documents submitted when Omar’s family arrived in the United States from Somalia in 1995.

Authorities are examining whether inaccurate information was included in those records, including questions surrounding her reported birth date.

Omar maintains that she became an American citizen in 2000 through her father’s naturalization while she was 17 years old.

Investigators are also reportedly reviewing allegations involving her previous marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom she married in 2009.

The longstanding accusation that Elmi is her biological brother has never been publicly proven, and Omar has repeatedly denied it.

The federal scrutiny has raised questions about whether prosecutors could eventually pursue proceedings challenging the congresswoman’s citizenship.

However, such action would require additional legal proceedings and evidence establishing grounds for denaturalization.

Omar’s attorneys have challenged the investigation and criticized the federal search as politically motivated.

The congresswoman has similarly accused the Trump administration of using law enforcement to intimidate her during the closing weeks of the election campaign, per Trending Politics.

Despite those accusations, Omar’s latest video emphasized that she intends to remain politically active.

She called for Democratic victories in both chambers of Congress while urging supporters to help finance her continued campaign activities.

The message also highlighted the financial pressures Omar says she faces as the federal investigation continues.

For now, authorities have not publicly announced criminal charges against the congresswoman or released findings establishing immigration fraud.

With the midterm elections approaching, Omar is attempting to maintain her campaign while responding to the ongoing federal scrutiny surrounding her immigration history.
