A Catholic priest in Ecuador was killed in a horrifying accident after a massive crucifix fell onto him during a livestreamed Mass, just moments after he delivered a sermon about death and the importance of spending time with loved ones.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was leading a service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in southern Guayaquil when the religious fixture suddenly detached from the wall behind him and struck him.
The tragedy unfolded in front of stunned parishioners and viewers watching the service online, with footage capturing the moment the crucifix fell and the congregation rushed to help.
What made the incident particularly striking was the subject of the priest’s final sermon.
Moments before the accident, Sánchez Molinari had been reflecting on the uncertainty of life and reminding worshippers that death could come unexpectedly.
“One day, all of us here will also die, and sometimes the time we’ve spent on things doesn’t have as much meaning as the time we spend with God,” the priest told his congregation.
He encouraged those attending Mass to reconsider how they spent their time, warning against becoming consumed by distractions such as constantly scrolling through their phones.
Instead, Sánchez Molinari urged worshippers to dedicate more attention to their faith and the people closest to them.
“The quality time we give to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, wives, children, and family — that time is the best spent,” he said.
The priest then began another prayer, asking God to bless the congregation.
Seconds later, the large crucifix mounted behind him suddenly came loose and crashed down onto him.
The incident was captured during the church’s livestream, with parishioners immediately reacting to the accident.
Screams erupted inside the church as members of the congregation rushed toward Sánchez Molinari in an attempt to provide assistance.
Others reportedly called for an ambulance as the emergency unfolded.
First responders arrived at the church, but the priest was pronounced dead later that day, according to officials.
The circumstances surrounding the accident have raised questions about how the heavy crucifix became detached from the wall.
Church authorities have not publicly identified what caused the structure to fall or whether there were any previous concerns regarding its installation.
Sánchez Molinari was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order established in 1732.
The congregation, commonly known as the Redemptorists, operates in approximately 80 countries and is dedicated to missionary work and religious service.
The priest served under the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, where his death prompted an official statement of mourning.
Cardinal Archbishop Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera confirmed the tragedy, while church officials paid tribute to Sánchez Molinari and his years of religious service.
“We announce that our beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, who served as parish priest of the Perpetual Help church in the Central Vicariate, has departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory,” the church said.
The priest was also remembered by the San Lorenzo Parish of Vinces in Ecuador’s Los Ríos province, where he had previously served for several years, per the New York Post.
Parish leaders expressed their condolences following news of his death.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the extraordinary coincidence between Sánchez Molinari’s final message and the circumstances of his death.
Only moments before the accident, the priest had been urging his congregation to recognize that life is temporary and that time with family, loved ones and God should not be taken for granted.
What began as an ordinary religious service ended in tragedy, leaving parishioners mourning the priest who had just delivered a message about life’s unpredictability.
Authorities have not announced a definitive cause for the crucifix’s collapse.
