Former NYPD officer and Secret Service agent Dan Bongino, now host of The Dan Bongino Show on Rumble, is reportedly being considered by President-elect Donald Trump for the role of Secret Service Director.
Alongside Bongino, Sean Curran, the current head of Trump’s protective detail, is also under consideration, according to a report by CNN.
The list of contenders also includes Robert Engel, a former head of Trump’s detail who gained attention for his testimony before the House Select Committee regarding the events of January 6, 2021.
Engel was present during Trump’s speech at the Ellipse, which occurred prior to the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The acting Secret Service Director, Ronald Rowe, reportedly attempted to arrange a meeting with Trump this week but was unsuccessful.
This discussion comes after the resignation of former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who stepped down following a failed assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. Cheatle’s departure has intensified scrutiny on the agency and its leadership.
Critics and lawmakers alike have emphasized the need for significant reforms within the Secret Service. An independent review panel established by the Department of Homeland Security has echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the agency would benefit from an outsider to refocus its efforts on its core mission of protection.
“Members of Congress as well as an independent review panel set up under the Department of Homeland Security have said the Secret Service needs a complete revamp,” CNN reported.
Bongino addressed the rumors during his show last week, stating that he has not had a formal conversation with Trump about the position.
While he did not confirm his interest, his background as both a Secret Service agent and a public figure has fueled speculation about his potential appointment.
As of now, Trump has not publicly indicated who he is considering for the role.
The decision will likely carry significant weight, given the challenges faced by the Secret Service in recent years and the heightened security concerns surrounding Trump’s presidency and public appearances.
Whether Trump opts for a seasoned insider like Curran or Engel, or brings in an outsider like Bongino to lead a much-needed overhaul of the agency, the selection will be closely watched.
