English broadcaster Piers Morgan suffered a broken femur after tripping on a step earlier in January, Resist the Mainstream reported.
His wife, Celia Walden, has now gone public with her frustrations about caring for her injured husband.
Walden penned an article for The Telegraph published Tuesday with a headline that reads, “Caring for my invalid husband Piers is the biggest test of our wedding vows.”
In the piece, Walden acknowledged that the aftermath of accidents typically proves less difficult than initially expected. However, she characterized this situation differently.
“This, however? So much worse. Certainly the biggest test of The Vows we’ve had to endure so far (and for anyone out there with a big hole where their sense of humour should be, yes, I do realise how lucky we are),” Walden wrote.
The columnist detailed her struggle with the practical realities of caring for an injured spouse.
She described assembling a shower stool for her husband’s use.
“I signed up to ‘in sickness and in health’, but there was nothing in the small print about ‘shower stools’, and once I’d assembled the most hideous piece of furniture in existence, I sent Piers a picture of it captioned: ‘This is what the end of a marriage looks like’, followed by a laughing emoji. His reply came seconds later: ‘WAY too soon,’” Walden wrote.
Walden admitted her patience has diminished as Morgan’s recovery has progressed. She confessed to altering his meal portions and withholding treats.
“I had wanted to be a selfless wife … and an endlessly tolerant nurse, but as the days have worn on and Piers’s snappiness has increased, my patience has worn thin … The portion sizes may have been a little reduced, the carbs eliminated and the ‘treats’ withheld as I have morphed from Florence Nightingale into Nurse Ratched. And we’ll get through this, of course we will, but I’ll be honest with you: right now, I’m one 4am fallen crutch away from Kathy Bates in Misery,” Walden concluded.
This public airing of marital grievances represents just the latest instance of Walden openly discussing her marriage to Morgan.
In February 2023, she posted a photograph in bed with actor Rupert Everett.
“In bed with Rupert Everett. And let me just say this: the man has good pillow talk,” Walden wrote, promoting an interview with the actor.
Walden has previously shared details about the couple’s courtship in an interview with The Sun.
She recounted Morgan’s declaration about their compatibility.
Morgan told her, “The thing is, you tick every single one of my boxes.”
“And I said, ‘Well, that’s weird because you don’t tick any of mine’. And now look at me …” Walden responded, followed by what The Sun described as a “resigned sigh.”
Walden characterized Morgan’s pursuit of her as unconventional. She described receiving unusual gifts at her office.
“Basically, it was all just to beat me into a corner. I kept insisting it was not going to happen but I found him quite amusing — and in the end I just got very tired and worn down, which is what they all hope for, isn’t it? So it was just easier to go with it,” Walden stated.
She summarized her marriage with a pointed observation.
“Being married to Piers is basically one very long eye roll,” Walden said.
Following Morgan’s departure from Good Morning Britain, Walden expressed mixed feelings about having her husband home more frequently.
“I wake[s] up and there he is, staring back at me morning after morning. But really, he used to come back and by 9am was absolutely flattened, lying there on the sofa, catatonic, not bothering anyone. Unfortunately he’s got all his energy back now. Please, someone, just give him a job!” Walden revealed.
