If they hadn’t bypassed the entire Primary process, the Democrat establishment wouldn’t be wrestling with this issue.
If it was just as simple as issuing an order, giving Joe the hook and pulling him off stage whether he wanted to leave or not, they would have done so days ago.
Aside from some esoteric ballot logistics nightmares, there are two big obstacles to that plan. The money and the process.
The money, question, involves cash attached to Joe’s campaign. There’s a LOT of money, and it’s stuck. It can’t just be shuffled around to some other campaign. There are rules and conditions to who is permitted to use it and how it can be reassigned, if at all.
The process question shows up in a Nikki Haley story.
In a show of unity at the WORST possible time for Joe Biden’s Democrats, Nikki Haley, who had no love lost for Donald Trump, made an unexpected announcement.

“The nominating convention is a time for Republican unity,” Haley will say in a statement. “JOE BIDEN is not competent to serve a second term and KAMALA HARRIS would be a disaster for America. We need a president who will hold our enemies to account, secure our border, cut our debt, and get our economy back on track. I encourage my delegates to support Donald Trump next week in Milwaukee.”
Asked if Haley is attending the convention, Haley spox CHANEY DENTON said that Haley “was not invited, and she’s fine with that. Trump deserves the convention he wants. She’s made it clear she’s voting for him and wishes him the best.” — July 7
Did you catch that? Nikki Haley is releasing delegates. After winning them in the Republican primaries, these delegates were hers to dispose of as she wished. She has released them, with an expectation that they will throw their support behind Trump.
Had she NOT released them, Trump would still win, but by a smaller margin.
Now look at the Democrats. Joe Biden has already won enough delegates to secure his party’s nomination. Those are HIS delegates to dispose of as he wished.
There is no provision or mechanism for that to be changed, short of him making exactly the kind of announcement that Nikki Haley made to release them.
Democrats have been doubling down and doubling down again after that as the great defenders of democratic process. Trump is an existential threat, or something. Blah-blah-blah dictator something-something-something.
But Demcrats are stuck with a Catch-22. Do they throw their support behind a candidate that even late night leftwing comics have given up trying to save? Or do they throw their back into efforts to push him out.
If they keep Joe in office, he could lose.
If they try to push him out… but fail… they hurt their candidate and help Orange Man Bad.
The one question they are NOT asking is the one about whether having a vegetable in the Oval Office for the next six months is good for the country… or the world. Because priorities, I suppose.
