The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was hospitalized after being shot at the family’s Virginia home Sunday night, and the couple’s son has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident, authorities said.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and was listed in stable condition, according to reports citing sources familiar with the situation.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirmed deputies responded to a reported shooting at a home in the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, around 7:32 p.m. Sunday.
Authorities said one person suffered serious injuries but initially did not identify the victim.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led to the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Sources told ESPN that Mia Bieniemy suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to her chest and arm.
The sheriff’s office said deputies found the victim after responding to the home and that the case remains under investigation. Officials said there is no indication of a continuing threat to the surrounding community.
The home where the shooting occurred is owned by Eric and Mia Bieniemy, according to property records cited by NBC News.
Neighbors described the family positively and said they were surprised by the incident.
One neighbor told NBC News that the family appeared to have a close relationship and had recently been seen working outside their home.
Eric Bieniemy was with the Chiefs earlier Sunday at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, but he was not present for Monday’s practice.
The team acknowledged the incident involving his family but declined to provide additional details out of respect for the family’s privacy.
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” the Chiefs said in a statement, according to People. “Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation after Monday’s practice, saying the organization was supporting Bieniemy and his family during the difficult time.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said.
He confirmed that Mia Bieniemy was stable and described her as “one of God’s good blessings.”
Reid said there was no timetable for when Bieniemy would return to the team, emphasizing that family matters would take priority.
During Bieniemy’s absence, Chiefs pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and offensive line coach Andy Heck are expected to assist with offensive responsibilities, according to reports.
Reid said the team would continue preparations while giving Bieniemy the time needed to handle the situation.
Bieniemy returned to Kansas City earlier this year as offensive coordinator after previously holding the position from 2018 through 2022.
During his first stint with the Chiefs, he helped oversee one of the NFL’s most successful offenses, reaching three Super Bowls and winning two championships alongside Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
After leaving Kansas City, Bieniemy served as offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders in 2023 and later worked at UCLA and with the Chicago Bears before returning to the Chiefs, according to the Associated Press.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said the criminal investigation remains active.
