A gunshot wound killed a person discovered inside a Mattapan rental home tied to the husband of Rep. Ayanna Pressley, according to a Boston Police Department report released this week.
Saturday afternoon brought officers rushing to 25 Malta St. after a radio dispatch alerted them to a shooting victim at the address. That call came in at roughly 1:52 p.m., setting a chaotic scene into motion.
Two patrol officers arrived first. Almost simultaneously, a walk-in visitor approached a separate police station in Hyde Park, telling an officer there that a person had been shot at the same Malta Street building, apartment #2, and remained on scene.
Inside that unit, officers located the victim in a bedroom. Paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene, prompting police to shift their classification of the incident to a death investigation.
Sunday morning brought a formal autopsy.
The medical examination, first detailed by the Boston Globe, determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound — though investigators stopped short of labeling the case a homicide.
Despite that distinction, Boston’s Homicide Unit took charge of the probe. Sergeant Detective John Boyle confirmed the unit’s involvement, describing the matter simply as a “death investigation.”
By Sunday afternoon, police said they had nothing further to disclose.
The victim’s identity remains unreleased, and investigators have offered no public details about a suspect, a motive, or the events leading to the shooting.
Ownership records connect the property directly to Pressley’s household. City filings list Conan Harris, the congresswoman’s husband, as the legal owner of the century-old building.
Constructed in 1910, the home stretches across roughly 2,713 square feet and contains seven to eight bedrooms alongside four bathrooms. Assessors currently value the property above $919,000.
At the moment the shooting occurred, the home sat on the open market. Listing records placed the asking price at $1.15 million, meaning the property was actively for sale even as tenants continued living inside.
Neither Pressley nor Harris occupies the Mattapan address themselves.
Public records and the congresswoman’s office confirm the couple’s actual residence sits in Boston’s Hyde Park section, apart from the rental property now under investigation.
A representative for Pressley acknowledged the Mattapan building’s rental status following the shooting.
That spokesperson delivered a short statement attributed to the congresswoman: “The Congresswoman extends her deepest condolences to the impacted family.”
Separately, the real estate agent marketing the home for sale spoke with WCVB television about the tenants living there.
She described the arrangement as an active rental, noting the occupants “have resided there for a while,” though she declined to pin down precisely how long.
Longtime residents of the block painted a fuller picture of life inside the multi-unit house.
One neighbor, who has called the street home for ten years, told the Boston Globe that renters filled every floor of the building — including teenagers of high school age living among them.
Another nearby resident described an otherwise unremarkable day before the shooting.
She told reporters she noticed nothing unusual leading up to the incident, but admitted the episode left her uneasy about her own children’s safety in the area.
Police have disclosed no timeline for when additional information might emerge.
The Homicide Unit’s continued oversight suggests investigators are treating the case with heightened scrutiny even absent a homicide classification.
No arrests have surfaced in connection with the death, and authorities have not indicated whether they view any individual as a person of interest.
The circumstances that led to the shooting inside apartment #2 remain officially unexplained.
The property’s simultaneous status as an occupied rental and an active real estate listing has added an unusual dimension to the case, given its ownership link to a sitting member of Congress.
That overlap was already in place before officers ever responded to the scene Saturday.
Investigators have not addressed whether the sale, the tenancy, or any personal dispute factored into the shooting. Police reiterated Sunday that no further details were available for release at that time.
The investigation continues under the Homicide Unit’s direction, with the victim’s identity still withheld pending family notification.
