Neil deGrasse Tyson has sparked intense debate over “trans” athletes and the structure of competitive sports after proposing that competitions might be organized by hormone ratios rather than gender.
On a recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, Tyson suggested that this approach could address what he called an “emergent space” for athletes expressing themselves across a gender spectrum.
The discussion brought up past criticism from LGBT tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who has openly disagreed with Tyson’s support for “trans” inclusion in women’s athletics.
Tyson reportedly asked, “Why does she have a beef with me?”
Maher responded pointedly, “Because you think like guys with d*cks should get in the women’s swimming pool, basically.”
Tyson explained that athletes could be categorized based on hormone ratios rather than biological sex, using the vague example of a female athlete with elevated testosterone facing scrutiny.
He did not identify the athlete or sport.
Critics argue that such a system could effectively eliminate women-only sports while leaving male-only leagues intact, raising concerns about fairness and safety.
Experts note that biological men could theoretically reduce testosterone to compete in women’s leagues, but biological women cannot artificially increase testosterone to compete at top levels in men’s leagues.
Consequently, top-tier women’s competitions could be dominated by men, while male-only leagues remain unchanged, effectively ending women-only sports.
The conversation also touched on reproductive biology.
Tyson claimed, “That’s what hormones do,” in reference to their role in sperm and egg production.
Maher countered that no hormone therapy can allow a male to produce eggs or a female to produce sperm, emphasizing the inherent biological differences between men and women.
Maher also criticized the idea of restructuring sports around a small minority, saying, “We can protect and respect—we’re not pretending that every baby is a jump ball.”
He illustrated physical disparities in athletics with hypothetical matchups in professional basketball, highlighting the competitive gap between men and women.
Tyson attempted a historical analogy, comparing gender-based debates in sports to past misuse of science to justify racial inequality.
Maher rejected the comparison, asserting that such analogies undermine credibility and distract from legitimate discussions about biology and fairness.
This exchange highlights ongoing concerns about fairness, safety, and the integrity of competitive sports.
Supporters of women’s athletics caution that eliminating gender categories could undermine competition and put female athletes at a disadvantage, while some activist groups push for policies prioritizing identity over biological realities.
Professional and amateur leagues are under pressure to review eligibility rules, hormone testing, and participation guidelines to ensure that fairness and safety for female athletes remain the top priority.
According to Breitbart, Tyson and Maher have previously debated “trans” inclusion in sports, including a 2023 segment on Real Time with Bill Maher, where the pair challenged claims that differences in male and female performance are purely societal.
As this debate continues, scientists, policymakers, and sports organizations must grapple with the tension between evolving social trends and the immutable realities of biology.
Tyson’s remarks highlight the challenges of maintaining fair competition, highlighting how efforts to accommodate an increasingly diverse society could unintentionally undermine women’s athletics.
