Elon Musk exploded online on Saturday after the European Union (EU) hit X with a massive $140 million penalty.
The EU accused the platform of failing to comply with transparency rules, triggering a fiery response from the tech billionaire.
Musk unloaded on the political bloc, calling for the entire European Union to be abolished.
“The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries,” Musk wrote.
He argued that national governments should represent their own people instead of a centralized bureaucracy in Brussels. Hours later, he escalated even further. “How long before the EU is gone,” Musk asked.
The European Commission fined X €120 million, claiming the platform violated the bloc’s Digital Services Act. Officials accused X of “deceptive design” surrounding verified checkmarks and a lack of advertising transparency.
EU regulators also claimed researchers were not given access to public platform data.
Musk unloaded on the 27-nation bloc all morning, reposting messages demanding that European countries leave the EU altogether.
“Withdraw from the EU to regain sovereignty,” he wrote. He insisted that he loved Europe but not the “bureaucratic monster that is the EU.”
Figures in the Trump administration responded instantly and sided with Musk. Top cabinet officials attacked the fine and blasted Europe for targeting American companies that protect free speech.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio slammed Brussels for interfering with American platforms, the Daily Mail reported.
“The European Commission’s $140 million fine isn’t just an attack on X,” Rubio said. “It’s an attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments.” He warned that the days of censoring Americans were over.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) joined the growing outrage against the EU penalty. He called the fine “an abomination” and urged President Donald Trump to retaliate.
“Trump should impose sanctions until this travesty is reversed,” Cruz posted.
Vice President J.D. Vance weighed in earlier in the week. He accused EU officials of trying to force X to censor users.
“The EU should be supporting free speech not attacking American companies over garbage,” Vance said. White House officials have repeatedly praised Musk for allowing open debate on the platform.
X now has roughly three months to correct the alleged violations, according to EU regulators.
Musk has shown no signs of backing down and has continued to attack the union for what he sees as authoritarian overreach. Musk renewed his call for Europeans to reject globalist politics.
“I mean it,” he wrote. “Not kidding.” He insisted that free countries should not be ruled by a centralized body that punishes dissent and tries to regulate speech. Pro-free speech lawmakers in Washington have increasingly echoed Musk’s position.
The EU claims the fine will force X to comply with platform transparency demands. But American officials are prepared for a prolonged fight.
The Biden administration previously targeted X for censorship but lost power. Since Trump returned, U.S. policy has shifted in favor of open speech.
The battle over the fine could transition into a diplomatic fight between the U.S. and the European Union. Musk has no intention of changing his tone. Millions of users continue to use X because it does not censor dissenting opinions.
Musk has framed the controversy as a global fight between freedom and government control. Pro-Trump lawmakers agree. The message coming from the U.S. is clear. Europe has no right to police American speech platforms.
