Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) delivered surprising praise for former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during an appearance on CNN Thursday.
Pelosi announced Thursday that she will not seek reelection, bringing to a close her nearly four-decade tenure representing San Francisco. The decision ends one of the most powerful careers in Democratic Party politics.
Greene appeared on “The Situation Room” to discuss Pelosi’s retirement announcement.
The Georgia Republican acknowledged her former House Speaker’s legislative effectiveness during her remarks.
“I will praise Nancy Pelosi. She had an incredible career for her party,” Greene stated during the interview.
Greene served under Pelosi’s speakership during her first term in Congress. She reflected on that experience while discussing the retiring Speaker’s track record.
“I served under her speakership in my first term of Congress, and I’m very impressed at her ability to get things done,” Greene said.
The Republican representative went further, expressing a desire for her own party to achieve similar legislative success.
Greene drew a direct comparison between Democratic and Republican effectiveness in advancing their respective agendas.
“I wish we could get things done for our party like Nancy Pelosi was able to deliver for her party,” Greene added.
Despite the praise, Greene also offered broader commentary on congressional longevity.
She extended well wishes to Pelosi while suggesting that lawmakers should consider earlier retirement.
“So I wish her well in her retirement, but I would like to see people exit Washington a lot sooner rather than wait until their 80s,” Greene said.
WATCH:
Pelosi’s tenure as House Speaker included leading the chamber through two impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
Those proceedings represented historic moments in American politics and deepened partisan divisions.
The relationship between Pelosi and Trump has been marked by public confrontations and sharp rhetoric.
One memorable incident occurred in 2020 when Pelosi tore up Trump’s State of the Union speech in front of cameras.
The feud between the two political figures has escalated in recent weeks.
The Daily Caller reported that Pelosi recently called Trump “a vile creature” in public remarks, while the president has continued using his longtime moniker for her.
Trump has repeatedly referred to Pelosi as “Crazy Nancy” throughout their years of political conflict.
President Trump also responded to Pelosi’s retirement announcement on Thursday.
He addressed reporters at a White House event, offering his own assessment of her decision.
Trump described Pelosi’s retirement as “a great service to the country.” However, his comments also included harsh criticism of her career and impact.
“She had been an evil woman and a tremendous liability who did a poor job and cost the country a lot in damages and reputation,” Trump told reporters.
Resist the Mainstream reported Thursday that Greene has begun privately signaling to her inner circle that she intends to pursue the presidency in 2028.
Greene has expressed confidence that she represents “real MAGA and that the others have strayed” from former President Trump’s authentic vision, according to a source.
