A Michigan community is mourning after investigators determined that the deaths of a Grand Haven Township family of eight were the result of a murder-suicide.
Authorities said Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, fatally shot his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children before taking his own life.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said autopsies confirmed that all eight family members died from gunshot wounds. Kristopher’s death was ruled a suicide, while Amanda’s and the children’s deaths were ruled homicides.
The victims were discovered after emergency crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the family’s home on Riverside Trail near Grand Haven.
Authorities said emergency crews had responded earlier Friday after reports of smoke in the area but initially found no active fire.
Later that day, crews returned after additional reports and discovered the deadly scene inside the residence.
The children included four boys, ages 5, 11, 12, and 15, along with two 11-year-old girls who had been adopted, according to WOOD. Authorities have not released the children’s names.
Investigators said they believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz killed his wife and children before taking his own life.
Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killings, including a possible motive.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened,” Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks said during a news conference.
Sparks said investigators were working to establish a timeline of events and reviewing evidence collected from the home.
He said authorities had seized “a lot of documentation” as part of the investigation but were not aware of a suicide note.
Amanda Karolkiewicz was remembered by family members and community leaders as a devoted mother and educator.
Her parents, Steve and Becky Lawwill, described their daughter as “a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students,” according to CHRON.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools Superintendent Kristin Perkowski said Amanda worked as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary and supported students and staff with kindness and compassion.
The district activated its Crisis Response Team to provide support to students and employees affected by the deaths.
Family members described Amanda as someone who brought joy to those around her and said she loved spending time with her children.
Relatives recalled the family enjoying activities together, including swimming and boating. Friends and community members gathered at a vigil to remember the family and offer support following the tragedy.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz had worked as a national vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 until earlier this month, according to the organization.
The group said he worked remotely for its national headquarters and declined to provide additional details about his departure, citing its policy on personnel matters, NBC Chicago reported.
A GoFundMe campaign was created to help Amanda’s parents cover expenses following the deaths.
Organizers said any remaining funds will be used to establish a scholarship in memory of the Karolkiewicz children. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised almost $18k.
The tragedy has affected families, classmates, neighbors, and community members throughout the Grand Haven area.
Counselors were made available through local organizations to help students and residents cope with the loss.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as they continue working to determine additional details surrounding the deaths and honor the lives of the victims.
