First Lady Melania Trump offered a rare glimpse into her private role as President Donald Trump’s closest sounding board Wednesday, saying she gives her husband candid feedback even when he would rather not hear it.
During an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Melania was asked to assess the president’s second term. She described Trump as intensely focused and said the turbulent international environment has left him with a demanding workload.
“He’s doing the best that he can,” she said, adding that the president works from morning until evening and maintains an energy level few people around him can match.
Her response came after host Brian Kilmeade asked how Trump’s approach has changed since his first term. Melania did not dwell on policy disputes, instead emphasizing the president’s discipline and the pressure created by several international crises.
Kilmeade then turned to Trump’s address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. Melania, who attended the speech in New York, said she told the president that his delivery was strong and that he had given a great speech.
The first lady also made clear that her praise is not automatic. “Sometimes he doesn’t want to hear it,” she said of her honest assessments, before adding that she always tells him the truth.
Trump’s UN address focused heavily on foreign policy and global security. During the speech, he recognized Melania’s efforts to reunite children displaced by the war between Russia and Ukraine, briefly looking through the chamber to locate her. White House video confirmed both Trumps attended the General Assembly.
Melania said during the Fox interview that she has direct channels involving both Russia and Ukraine and that her representative continues working to bring separated children back to their families. She described the effort as an ongoing priority.
She also pushed back against the idea that her selective public schedule reflects inactivity, saying much of her work occurs outside public view. The first lady cited preparations for her New York events and the upcoming state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping as examples of projects she has helped coordinate.
The television appearance came during an unusually public week for the first lady. Hours later, she rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange to launch IMPERIA, an initiative focused on expanding women’s economic power and leadership. NYSE described the inaugural summit as a gathering of female executives and other business leaders.
At the summit, Melania argued that women remain an underrecognized force in the global economy—not merely as consumers, but as company founders, investors and owners. She encouraged participants to build wealth, create opportunities and make room for the women who follow them, per the Daily Mail.
She also previewed a two-part docuseries expected later this year. Melania said the project will feature one-on-one conversations and answers to personal questions she has not previously addressed publicly.
Her comments about the president offered a characteristic blend of loyalty and independence. She publicly praised Trump’s stamina and UN performance while also portraying herself as someone willing to deliver an unwelcome opinion behind closed doors.
