Meghan Markle opened up about her at-home rituals with Prince Harry and their children during a recent appearance.
She spoke with lifestyle blogger Courtney Adamo at the Godmothers Bookstore in Montecito, California.
“First thing I do when I wake up in the morning is turn the music on in the house,” Markle said Wednesday.
She explained that music helps set a positive tone for her family.
Markle revealed she even travels with a portable speaker and a scented candle to recreate that environment away from home.
“I always travel with a candle,” the Duchess said. “I am so conscious and sensitive to fragrance, and I associate that with home.”
The interview was in support of Adamo’s new book, The Family Home: Inspiring Ideas For A Home Filled With Joy.
Markle shared one tip she uses from the book called the “rose and thorn” ritual, per Page Six.
This technique encourages her children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, to say more than “yes” or “no” when asked about their day.
“Our daughter, she’s four and she’s a very strong personality and she’s incredible,” Markle said. “And now she’s in this moment where I say, ‘What’s your rose and your thorn?’ And she goes, ‘My day was just a blast.’”
Another ritual is the “healing blanket,” a gift from bookstore co-founder Victoria Jackson.
The children reach for the blanket when they’re not feeling well, providing comfort during minor illnesses or tough days.
Markle first met Adamo in college at Northwestern University, where they were in the same sorority.
The two women also shared a memorable road trip, driving 30 hours from Los Angeles to Chicago over three days after a flight disruption on 9/11.
“So the two of us ended up driving 30 hours over three days. 10 hours a day. From Los Angeles to Chicago together at one of the most fragile, tender times in this country,” Markle said.
She noted that the journey reinforced her appreciation for community.
After the bookstore event, Markle hosted attendees on the patio, serving Sauvignon Blanc from her wine line, As Ever.
The Duchess’s stories offer a glimpse into her parenting style and her focus on creating a nurturing home for her children.
Markle emphasized that small rituals, such as music, the “rose and thorn,” and the “healing blanket,” make a significant difference in family life.
Her conversation highlighted the importance of intentionality and mindfulness in raising young children.
By sharing these insights, Markle connected with attendees and fans, showing a relatable side to her daily life with Prince Harry.
The discussion underscored Markle’s efforts to maintain joy and comfort in her family routines.
Fans responded positively, appreciating her candid sharing of parenting techniques and personal rituals.
The bookstore event and reception gave attendees a personal encounter with the Duchess, blending lifestyle advice with social engagement.
